The Fisherman and His Wife
Nadia Wu Modern World Literature
2721 Section 1

The Fisherman’s Return I paced about anxiously as I waited for his return. How am I going to tell him the news? How would he react? What would he have to say? These thoughts ran through my mind as I tried to figure out a way to break the news gently to him. My husband was not known for being the most complacent person in our village. His terrible fits of anger had the tendency to bring a few of our neighbors to our doorstep a few times too many. Yet, when he was not so temperamental, he was a loving husband and he did take good care of me. He is an extremely hard-working man and he does try his level best to maintain our household, but regardless of that, his constant absence will continue to be a strain on our marriage. He spent most of his time at sea, engaged in an occupation that was extremely dangerous, so that he could have the money to run our household. There are times when I do not see him for days and weeks at a stretch but I am expected to come to terms with this and be the “dutiful wife” that I am expected to be. There are times when I wonder why my parents forced me into such a marriage, a marriage in which they knew I would be lonely in. Perhaps if I had not listened to the elders I might have not been in such a situation, standing here, waiting for my husband to return after being away for four days. All at once I heard a knock on the door. “Is anybody home?” I heard my husband call out. The familiarity of his voice sent a resonating feeling of fear throughout my entire body. I was clearly not prepared to face him but I had no choice but to do so. “I’m in here! I was preparing some food for dinner” I said, walking towards him to greet him. The last of four days had clearly not been kind to him. He looked even more worn out and tired than before, which I had not thought possible. Yet, as soon as he saw me, his whole face lit up and he at once embraced me. This man, beneath his

I noticed how abandoned the farm was. It needs much work. Jake told me about his parent’s death. And how now I am the only family he has. I knew what I had to do. Jake was responsible for the outside and I had to tend to the house. We unloaded the wagon and walked up to the house. It was way bigger then my parent’s home. This house can have fit three of them inside of it. Jake told me it was built in the finest wood that was available in his town. When the doors and windows were open the house came to life. Dust flew with the gust of wind that came in. As a married lady I was the woman of my own house now. It’s my job to make this home for my husband and me. Jake went out to tend to the yards and animals. And I started repairing the house. I like candles in the rooms to burn most of the dust smell. The sun just wasn’t doing its job today. I heated water in a pan to scrub the walls and floors. After all the dust was gone, I heated more water and gathered all the fabrics to clean them. When I was hanging the fabrics on the line I watch Jake feed the horses he looked so busy. Once the house was done I went out to his mothers garden. It needed much help also. I gathered all the vegetables that were ready. Pulled up the weeds that have grown over the time it was not tended to. Golfers poked their heads out, curious with whom was out in their garden. I was on edge, I was afraid of snakes and if there were weeds mice and golfers there…

As I lay in that dark, cold hole, naked and emaciated I had lost all hold on reality and thought that I was dead, not to mention my whole family as well. I had never been more fearful in my life, paralysed by the fear of not knowing what they were going to do with me or if I was going to make it through to live another day. Then you came along, your warm caring touch and generosity restored my faith in humanity and gave me some hope, something to fight and live for. Somehow you were always there for me when I needed you the most, always bringing food and providing me with water, risking your own life in the process.…

In the short story Two Fishermen by Morley Callaghan, the main character K. Smith reveals the author's view against capital punishment through the contradiction of his affable nature and small appearance with his role of executioner. One of the first questions that are asked about Smith is "Did he look like the hangman?" This indicates that the author wants us to focus on Smitty's physical appearance and compare it to that of a hangman. At the beginning of the story, he is described as "a mild, harmless-looking little guy" who is "awfully polite". When Michael first sees Smitty, he is observed to be a "little fellow without a hat....a very small man with little grey baby curls on the back of his neck..." Callaghan uses words such as "little fellow", "very small", and "little grey baby curls" to make his physical appearance resemble that of a child which is dissimilar to what a hangman would be visualized like. Smitty seems to have a very friendly nature as he smiles a lot and really appreciates Michael's company. Moreover, he talks about his wife and children, which shows that he has a family he loves and cares about. Not only Smitty’s physical appearance, but also his neighbourly nature goes against the stereotypical image of a hangman. Callaghan uses this irony to give his readers the message that capital punishment should not be supported. According to Smitty, he works as an executioner because he believes that "somebody's got to do the job". Due to the existence of capital punishment, a man as warm and pleasant as Smitty finds the need for a hangman to be important. He also seems to be deluding himself into thinking that capital punishment is essential to eliminate the criminals from the society. When Michael asks him if he has heard about Thomas Delany, he responds back saying "I never read about them". He does not want to read about the people he is to execute so that he does not sympathize with them. This suggests that he…

I had inquired about it to the staff member and they had told me that it from one of the residents who I violent a lot and had constant mood swings. Never in my life had I seen a woman quite as beautiful as her. I woke up on the morning of September 11, 2001 and looked at my wife still sleeping next to me. I took a moment to revel in her beauty, and think about what it would be like to be a father. Irene was eight months pregnant with a little boy. I had no doubts that she would be an outstanding mother, but i doubted myself. I'm a firefighter, I'm never home. What if I wasn't the best dad? So many things rushed my mind, but I pushed them aside and began gathering my things to head to work. It was only 5 o'clock so I was very careful not to wake my sleeping wife. She was exhausted and I knew it, so my intentions were to let her rest. I've never regretted anything more than not waking her on that morning. I walked out my front door without so much as an "I Love You." or a "Goodbye sweetie, have a good day!" I was gone to work, gone to Squad 252 of the FDNY.…

Rufo was biting at the bit, as always, to be let outside to chase the squirrels and creatures still awoken from the night before. As I reached for the door handle, he lunged onto me and began licking my face intrusively. A little too much slobber for my liking, but hey, I couldn’t complain. At least someone still loved me. Laying on the floor, Rufo expressing his love and companionship, I began reminiscing on my ending marriage. How was this all happening? The love of my life, Hallina, was leaving me. She was the woman I knew I would spend the rest of my life with. The woman who would have my blue-eyed babies; the woman who would be there for me in every success, triumph, and every situation…she was truly leaving me. “How is this happening?” I inquired to Rufo. Rufo simply looked at me with a puzzled, crazed look.…

I woke up in the hospital, the room was stuffy and the air had a undertone of bleach. Beautiful framed pieces of art hang the wall. There were vases of flowers in the room. I look around, every surface was dustless. The nurses were unhurried, they moved with a serene peacefulness from room to room on their rounds. Above the double doors were large blue plastic signs with the area of the hospital that lie ahead. I got this overwhelming feeling of wanting to cry. Brick by brick my walls were tumbling down. The feeling punched through my empty stomach ripping through my bones, guts, and muscles. I knew Ms. Anna would be upset.…

    Why I Love Alabama

In 1997 my parents moved us to Florida where I got a job working at a place called Ruskin Tomato Growers. After working there for about two weeks I met and fell in love with the man that I would soon marry. Within a week Charles asked me if I would move to his home state of Alabama and become his wife. I agreed and on the eleventh day of knowing him were married in a small ceremony at the court house. When we arrived in Alabama it was winter time. There was a little bit of snow on the ground but not much. You could see smoke coming out of all the chimney’s and smell the wood that was used to warm the homes. It felt very inviting and I was happy I made the decision to move there. One thing I found amusing though is when they had two inches of snow on the ground they would wrap chains on their tires so they could drive in it. When we arrived at my mother in laws house the first thing I saw was a beautiful decorated Christmas tree standing in the corner and smelt the biscuits and sausage gravy cooking in the kitchen. My stomach began to growl I was so hungry. When we married I didn’t really know anything so my mother in law Era took me under her wing and taught me. I’d get in the kitchen and watch her cook. I loved watching her make homemade biscuits. She would pour the flour into the bowl, added the ingredients than roll them into balls in her aging hands. They always turned out perfect and oh so mouthwatering. I remember waking up early one morning and decided to make breakfast. I got out the flour to make the biscuits, added the ingredients and rolled them the way I watched her do. After putting them in the oven I scrambled the eggs and fried the bacon. When breakfast was ready, I told them to come eat. The three of us sat down at the table. Charles got a couple of biscuits and went to open them so he could add butter. They was so hard that wasn’t happening. In fact they was so…

It was in the wee hours of the morning when the telephone gave a shrill cry of urgency – alarming, awesome and awakening. As if commanded by some magic wand, all the lights in the house came on but nobody ventured to attend to the call. Now it was my mother of stout heart and great courage who picked up the instrument. Soon the room was filled with all members of the household eagerly looking at Mother for the news. It was painfully obvious to all of us that even her strong disposition had deserted her for she was sobbing on the phone. She then broke the news to us – Grandpa had passed away. We came together holding each other in one group hug; as for myself, I broke away and in the comfort of my room, went into an uncontrollable fit of sobbing.…

It all began with a simple phone call one night after dinner, ”Eric” my father hollered up the stairs, “it’s for you. It’s Emma, and she sounds upset.” As he came downstairs to pick up the phone, Eric was not in the best mood. He was tired and had looked forward to a nice quiet evening at home, not another stupid adventure with Emma. Thirty minutes later, Emma’s silver Mustang convertible swung into our driveway, and Emma was leaning on the horn before the car came to a full stop. Grabbing the big coat from the closet, Eric walked out of the front door with all the enthusiasm of a man going to stand before a firing squad.…

Mrs Fletcher clenched and unclenched her hands at her sides, her eyes seeking wildly as the fury roared impotently in her. How dare he walk away from her like that! Mrs Fletcher, enraged with acrimony, stormed into the kitchen, her hands had started to drip with sweat from all the clasping she had done with such compulsion, she calmly drifted towards her silver basin where all the plates and cutlery had remained from last night’s meal. Mrs Fletcher gazed outside the casement above the basin which looked out over the courtyard, she saw that dark grim clouds were gathering in a sky which was once very clear and she sighed to herself thinking that her relationship with Mr Fletcher had once been very happy and cheerful like a sunny day but because of the arguments and fights the relationship was now sad and depressing just like a dark and cloudy day. Mrs Fletcher started to wash her hands to wash off the sweat. Mrs Fletcher aspired to think about something else but while she was washing she felt something cold and metallic on her finger, she looked down and saw her wedding ring. Her face immediately turned red. Everywhere she looked there are always constant reminders of her unfaithful husband. She grabbed the ring on her finger and pulled it out with such great force she pulled the finger out of its socket.…

This seemed to be the easy answer for me. I did not put myself out there. There fore I did not risk rejection. Looking back now, that was not the answer. I know now that I missed out on a lot. As I released my grip on the pillow that I had used to smother the old man, a sense of relief had flown through the vein in my neck like a bird’s wings flowing through the midnight air. The thought of his eye no longer piercing my soul gave me a sensational chill that I have never felt before. Truly I have done my justice in this world, but this feeling of justice only lasted yet a brief second. For now I have to hide what I have done. I look down at the boards on the floor that flow throughout the house, a great place to place the old man. I drag his body down the hall to the guest room and place him under the boards in there. As I fix the floors a ring followed by a continuous thumping of the old man’s heart beat was playing in my ear like a million man orchestra.…
