The Filipino Spirit is Stronger Than Any Typhoon
The Filipino spirit is stronger than any typhoon

One day, I was surfing Tumblr and I came across this slogan with the words; "The Filipino spirit is stronger than any typhoon". I don't know but something about those words clicked in me. We've been through a lot of strong typhoon but, so far Typhoon Yolanda was the worst- taking thousands of lives and leaving millions of people with nothing.
And as if struggling to recover from Typhoon Yolanda is not difficult enough, Filipinos in Bohol are still recovering from the earthquake that had hit the country just last month. Talk about bad luck. But of course, Filipinos have already adapted to this. Because of our location our country has been a victim of countless typhoons, earthquakes, and other natural disasters. So, really we are not a stranger to these kind of things.
Despite, of all the happenings we remain strong. In fact, in times like this we become even more united. And like what other people say; "It's 'bayanihan' at it's finest".
Not that I'm bragging but, we are such an optimistic nation. Throw a 7.2 earthquake at us or a super typhoon that left us devastated or any other natural disaster, we will bounce back and continue our lives again, because we are a nation full of resilient people. The spirit of helping one another in every calamity makes us FIlipinos even stronger, we learn our lessons from the past happenings and we always put a smile on our faces as we continue to live on.

Because of this, the tension between good and evil sometimes produces a positive, creative result. When the finish line of the Boston Marathon was bombed, there were few deaths, yet countless life-altering injuries, not to mention emotional trauma. However, after this event took place, citizens of Boston and all over the US started “Boston Strong,” a simple phrase that strengthened the community, improved outreach, and unified everyone involved. Devastating natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina or the earthquake that struck Nepal are other incidents of disaster and misfortune creating community outreach and unity. After disasters, communities are additionally made physically stronger. During the previous day of the hurricane, my dad was working at school when all students and staff were directed to evacuate the campus and prepare for what they knew now was an extremely powerful storm. At that moment, nobody thought that the storm was just going to pass by without harming anyone. People grew frantic, and prayed that the storm would calm down, or turn. Lucky for the people on O’ahu, it did. My father and his parents evacuated to his step-mother’s brother’s house, which was on higher grounds, and much…

In the article, Psychological Impact of Japan Disaster…, Dr. Magda Osman, Psychology professor at Queen Mary, University of London, points out that the disaster in Japan had an immediate effect on thousands of citizens but the long term psychological effects are yet to be seen. “A disaster like the Japan earthquake has such wide-ranging implications, especially on the psychological well-being of those affected," Dr. Osman said ("Psychological Impact," 2011, p. 1). He proceeds by explaining the typical comradely reaction of communities after a natural disaster. This reaction is important to the rebuilding process. Individuals begin to assess the current situation, take control and respond. Dr. Osmond explicates that this initially felt drive of control and solution is short lived. Typically around the 60 day range, a second wave of reality becomes apparent and the true severity of the situation begins to become apparent. It is this event, according to Osmond, which triggers the severe depression outbreaks that follow natural disasters…
