TITLE: THE FACTORS INFLUENCE STUDENTS CUMULATIVE GRADE POINT AVERAGE (CGPA)
Our research about the factors influences students Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). The factors are gender, financial status, education level of parents and study time, which influence student’s Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). This research is based on 30 respondents from University Tenaga Nasional which are from several courses, from Accounting, Finance, Human Resource, Marketing, and Entrepreneur Development.
Apart from that, our independent variable is Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) and our dependent variables are gender, financial status, education level of parents and study time. Besides that, we have included regression analysis. In the regression analysis, there is a relationship between dependent variable and independent variables. It is proven by the SPSS that these factors will influence students Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).
BACKGROUND OF THE RESEARCH
Students are main assets of Universities. The students performance which academic achievement plays an important role in producing the best quality graduates who will become great leader and manpower for the country, thus responsible for the country’s economic and social development. The performance of students in Universities should be a concern not only to the administrators and educators, but also to corporations in the labor market. Academic achievement is one of the main factors considered by the employer in recruiting workers especially fresh graduate. Thus, students have to place the greatest effort in their study to obtain good grade in order to fulfill the employer’s demand. Student’s academic achievement is measured by the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).
A Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is a calculation of the average of all of a student's grades for all semesters and courses completed up to a given academic term, whereas the Grade Point Average (GPA) may only refer to one term. In Malaysia higher education institutions usually apply the U.S. American grading system which converted as grade point from (0.00 to 4.00). Many factor could act as barrier and aids to students achieving the high CGPA that reflect their overall academic performance. Our research only focuses students CGPA at University Tenaga Nasional. The CGPA will determine student’s future success. Our objective to do this research is to investigate some factors that influence students CGPA such as gender, financial status, education level of parents and study time.
The first factor influencing the CGPA of student’s is gender. Gender relates to the difference in sex that is either male or female. Nowadays, there are more females undergraduates compared to males in the local universities. Therefore, more females will graduate out compared to males. From this, it can be seen that females have high chances to get better CGPA’s whereas the males have less chances to get a good CGPA. This is because females will have more responsibilities and concern in their studies whereas males focus on entertainment such as footballs, hanging around with friends and playing games. Thus, the gender plays an important role in influencing the CGPA of a student.
Other than that, the second factor influencing the CGPA of student is financial status. Mainly, most of the students in universities are not rich to support their education fees so they...
