The Effects of Students Playing Sports
During a student’s busy life of school, homework, family, and friends, the advantages of being on a sports team may be neglected due to fears of grades or less personal relaxation time. However, these fears should not affect our decision on playing sports, either individually or on a team, because of the endless amount of physical and psychological advantages that would result from this. Firstly, the effect of being on a sports team helps a student to have better social skills. Participating in a team sport gives students the feeling of being a part of something greater than themselves and helps students to bond with friends and teammates. Being on a team also teaches the importance of teamwork and communication. An example of this is the team sport of basketball where communication is the key to success. If there is a lack of communication between a player and his teammates, the opposing team will get easy points and will most probably win the game. Secondly, students learn that hard work and practice will yield positive effects and better skills. When students practice a skill for a sport, they have the objective to become better; when they see that their skills are improving, they will become more confident in themselves and will learn that hard work is the key to success. This applies directly to other aspects of a student’s life such as achieving better grades and relationships. By practicing for sports, students learn that to earn higher, time and effort is needed to be put into studying for tests and finishing homework. This also applies to a student’s relationship with God. They know that taking time to pray and read the Bible will help them grow closer to God. Thirdly, playing sports does not only help a student physically, but also psychologically. Playing sports helps to prevent depression and reduce anxiety.
