Executive summary
The topic of passive or involuntary smoking was first addressed in the 1972 U.S. Surgeon General’s report (The Health Consequences of Smoking, U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare[USDHEW] 1972). The studies supported a conclusion that
“an atmosphere contaminated with tobacco smoke can contribute to the discomfort of many individuals”(USDHEW 1972, p. 7). The possibility that CO emitted from cigarettes could harm persons with chronic heart or lung disease was also mentioned. It is 28 years on and although there has been some action from our governments to prevent people smoking in certain public places I propose that most are not aware the full damage secondary smoke has. It is for this reason I carries out this survey.
The Survey had 16 closed ended questions with some questions and there was also an opportunity for research participants to provide open-ended responses. The survey was executed via facebook by contacting individual contacts through email and posting the link on all contacts pages.
