1.0 INTRODUCTION
Today, Communication enters our daily lives in so many different ways that it is very easy to overlook the multitude of its facets. The telephones in our hands, the radios and televisions in our living rooms, and the computer terminals with access to the Internet in our offices and homes are all capable of providing rapid communications from every corner of the globe.
Computers have become indispensable in the contemporary world as a powerful means for communication and education. Interest in learning languages has increased due to the availability of the Internet, which provides easy access to every possible kind of information, and serves as an effective tool to facilitate learning. Today, ICT is an integral part of our everyday lives. Children especially have an intuitive grasp of how technology works. They love to use it to play and to learn. It is no surprise, then, that ICT in the classroom has been linked with positive improvements in attainment and motivation.
2.0 WHAT IS ‘IT’ (Information Technology)?
Information technology (IT), as defined by the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) is: "the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware" In short, IT deals with the use of electronic computers and computer software to convert, store, protect, process, transmit and retrieve information.
In line with globalization and the ICT age, skills related to ICT are incorporated in the learning outcomes of the Curriculum Specifications for Malaysian schools. These skills include the use of multimedia resources such as TV documentaries and Internet resources as well as the utilization of computer-related activities such as e-mail activities, networking and interacting with electronic courseware.
