The effect of video games on youth
In the generation of today many of us are exposed to technology that influences the way we think and act.one of the most influential pieces of technology proven by studies are video games. A majority of the youth have been exposed to gaming for a long time some of us taking it as a way to relax but what happens, though, when the gaming starts to take over? When you dream the game…When your fingers start mimicking playing the game when you are nowhere near it? When you are dying to get back home so that you can continue where you left off.
Good day to the teacher and fellow boys and girls today my topic is on how video games affects the youth.
Video games are a multi-billion dollar industry. So as you can imagine, there are a lot of people supporting this industry. Many scientists and psychologists have studied the effects of videogames and found that video games can actually have many benefits – the main one is making kids smart. Video games may actually teach kids high-level thinking skills that they will need in the future.
There are a vast amount of pro’s and cons to video gaming which ultimately affect the way we think and carry out ourselves in regards to problem solving, logic, personality, decision making etc.
Here are some of the positive effects of video gaming:
Hand-eye coordination, fine motor and spatial skills. In shooting games, the character may be running and shooting at the same time. This requires the real-world player to keep track of the position of the character, where he is heading, their speed, where the gun is aiming, if the gunfire is hitting the enemy. The player must then coordinate the brain's interpretation and reaction with the movement in their hands. Multitasking, simultaneous tracking of many shifting variables and managing multiple objectives. In strategy games, for instance, while developing a city, an unexpected surprise like an enemy might emerge. This forces the player to be flexible and quickly change tactics.

People seem to have different perspectives on video gaming. Some may say that its bad for you and others may disagree. Steven Johnson, the author of Everything Bad is Good for You, believes that video gaming comes with many benefits. Unlike reading books, video games actually help you trigger your mind and make you analyze situations, he admits. He also claims that when reading a small portion of your brain is devoted and when it comes to video games you trigger most of your senses. When playing video games there are two stages you go through, they are probing and telescoping. Probing is the ability of searching and discovering options as he is introduced to the game. After discovering and understand the game better it leads the player into making decisions which is what Johnson describes as Telescoping. From my own experiences I have to agree with Johnson, I feel that video games can be very helpful and can even improve out academic performance.…
