Alcohol at 18: A Definite to Consider

The drinking age in the United States is now twenty one years of age. Some people believe that this age is too high to be the minimum age to be able to legally drink and others feel that it is the perfect age. This topic is very huge and has been debated for years. The United States drinking age has gone up and down, and recently, in 1984, it has gone up to twenty one. Many events took place before the drinking age went up. It all began when the United States slowly tried to ban alcohol in every state for every person no matter what your age was. They did succeed. This is called National Prohibition. Prohibition started in 1919 and lasted until 1933. When Prohibition started, the Constitution gained the 18th Amendment. The 18th Amendment “prohibited the manufacture, sale, transport, import, or export of alcoholic beverages”. However, this amendment was repealed in 1933 by the 21th amendment, which legalized beer and other alcohol. Once National Prohibition ended, each state created their own set of drinking laws. Some were twenty one; others were eighteen, and then some in between. This lasted for a few years, but then the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 came along. This act forced all states to change their drinking age to twenty one or lose part of the Federal-aid highway funds. It also said the states should pass laws that helped fight drunk driving. So, the drinking ages were set to twenty one, but this could change. Having the drinking age set to twenty one might not be the best. National Prohibition and safety issues, like underground drinking, are all factors that must be considered in making this decision. Because of these factors, the national drinking age of the United States should be lowered from twenty one to eighteen. Ponder for a moment on how many young adult and teenagers illegally drink under the age of twenty one. It

There has been a question looming for years on whether or not the drinking age should be dropped down from 21 to 18. Many people have views or opinions on what the legal drinking age should or should not be. Right now the legal drinking age is 21, and many people, especially a younger crowd, are working extremely hard to change that to 18. All over the world, different countries have a different standard which leads to a different drinking age. There is a reason why the United States has put the legal drinking age at 21. This was to ensure that there will be no underage drinking, which today has clearly not been the best idea because underage drinking happens more and more frequently.…

In July of 1984, the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 was put into act, making the national drinking age 21, higher than it was in any individual state. Ever since, there has been an ongoing debate on whether or not the change has been effective and if it was necessary. I agree with the article “The Drinking Age of 21 Saves Lives,” by Toben F. Nelson and Traci L. Toomey, because they effectively used logos and ethos to present their argument and persuade the audience into agreeing that the drinking age has been successful since its move to the age of 21.…

I believe that the drinking age should remain at twenty-one. Underage drinking is dangerous to the drinker and the rest of society. The U.S Department of Health and Human Services analysis shows that frequent binge drinking causes young people to engage in risky behavior such as using other drugs like marijuana and shows that people tend to have sex with six or more partners. Alcohol is very unhealthy for the brain and drinking at a young age could cause many health problems which includes becoming addicted. Alcohol related car accidents would increase if the drinking age were lowered; teens are too irresponsible to handle it. Those who drink are not always aware of their actions, therefore they are more likely to so other drugs which could also result in an unplanned pregnancy increase. If the drinking age remains the…

Before 1984, the drinking age in the United States was lower. Individual states had the power to set their legal drinking ages. However, Congress passed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984, which stated, “If you (states) want the federal money you’re entitled to for your roads and transportation systems, then you will raise your minimum drinking age to 21 years old.” At first, a few states refused, but by 1988,…
