Dinner Reception

For every hospitality student in term 1, there is always a tradition to have a get-together dinner offered by the students in term 5. This dinner was held on the 24th of October 2013, Thursday at 7:00PM. The venue of this dinner was located at Thyme & Tarragon restaurant, a fine dining restaurant under Taylor’s University School of Hospitality, Tourism & Culinary Arts (TCHT) which is operated by all hospitality and culinary arts students to practice their new found skills. There was also a welcome drink served at the Tangerine Deck half an hour before the dinner starts. The refreshing beverage offered was called ‘Nojito’. It was similar to a cocktail called ‘Mojito’, except that this drink does not contain alcohol.

This year, the concept of the dinner was ‘Bring the Time Back to 70’s’ which requires students to dress up like the hippies back in the 1970’s. On that night, the restaurant was decorated according to the theme in a funky, retro way. There was a disco ball and also reuseable CDs as decorations. When the clock strikes 7:00PM, the host welcomed the guests into the restaurant with a friendly smile. The service provided was a plated service. The orange table setting gave a cheerful, cordial atmosphere and was set according to a table d'hôte menu. As soon as everyone was seated, the waiter and waitress picked up the nicely folded rose napkin on the table and placed it on the guests’ lap carefully. The menu was placed on the table. This can assure guests to find out what they will be served on that day and if they have any allergic reaction to it or not. On that night, the reception was started with a short speech by the programme director, Mr. Alex Stephen. Then, the host kick-started the party with an ice-breaker game. Later on, the appetiser called ‘Meatballs Ratatouille Nicoise’ was served. It has three meatballs with an option of beef or chicken, served with diced tomatoes, onions, zucchini,

The clattering of plates and the clicking of heels on a tile floor are the white noise of the restaurant. Kitchen partners rush to get the next salad ready, the next steak cooking. The expeditors keep the restaurant working smoothly, the source of communication between the front of the house and the kitchen. A business partner shouts “Corner!” as she rounds the bend between the kitchen and the hallway leading to the general area of the restaurant. Two servers see each other for the first time during their shift and exchange a quick “How are you?” without stopping long enough to hear the reply of their co-worker. A manager explains the goals of the evening to a group of distracted employees in the pass-through, watching a rush of customers enter through the double glass doors. The restaurant lifestyle is a unique discourse with success resulting from the quality of customer service and understanding the value of time-saving efficiency.…

During spring break, I have plenty of time to watch Bay Area local TV program Check, Please! It is a popular program for reviewing and describing different local restaurants. In each episode, they invite three guests sitting together with the host to discuss three eating establishments, each guest recommends one his/her favorite restaurant on the show, and everyone in the group is required to visit other person selection. Then, they start to discuss their experience. Leslie Sbrocco, who has blond hair and wore a black white spot suit with light blue fancy necklace, is the host of the show. He talks with her charming smile throughout the whole program. Her guests were two guys named Brian and Gary, and a lady, Beth. If I could invite one person from history to dinner, living or deceased, I think I would invite Maria Theresa. I would like to have dinner with her because she seems like she was a very interesting ruler. She was born in 1717 and became the Hapsburg empress of Austria at age 23 after her father Charles VI died. She was the first female ruler of any of the Hapsburg lands. She was determined to remain in power and ended up ruling for forty years. She nurtured 16 children, including three future European rulers. She was known for her courage, warmth and beauty. Have you ever had an argument in which you just wanted to punch the adversary right in the face? Well, that's just about how a young girl felt in the fascinating fictional story written by Mina Gardner, The Dinner Party. The main message of this story is that any female can be just as equal as any male. In this story, a young girl brings up a thought provoking topic.
