Good and bad mothers
Susan straight gives two different outlooks on motherhood a good mother and a bad mother in Highwire moon you have many different views of good and bad mothers. Many women come from different backgrounds so many kids will be raised differently. Most women will raise their kids in ways that they were raised and some may say that their parenting is bad but that may be the way they raise their children in their culture. Many people have different backgrounds and were brought up around different things Susan points this out several times in the book you have the good mother and bad mothers in my opinion I believe that Sandy and Serafina are examples of good mothers in the book and Callie and Lee are examples of bad mothers. Sandy is an example of a good mother even though she isn’t Elvia’s real mother she treated Elvia like a real daughter with she loved Elvia when Elvia ran away to find her mom and she called Sandy from the pay phone Sandy told Elvia “If you find her, and it doesn’t work out, come here, okay? You remember where? Be careful. If you need me, call me again. Please.” (Page 101) Sandy didn’t have to invite Elvia back into her home if things didn’t work out with her mom she could’ve just told her to go back to her father even if things didn’t work out with Serafina. Sandy treats Elvia as if she was her own daughter. Elvia looks at sandy as more of a mother figure other than just her other foster mom because sandy never tried to force her to talk instead she told Elvia “some people think dumb kids don’t talk. But I think smart kids don’t talk until they have something important to say.” (Page 13). Sandy let Elvia be herself but not by forcing things out of her just by letting her get comfortable with her surroundings. Elvia knew that if she needed anyone or anything Sandy would be the one person that she could go to. Sandy goes above and beyond for Elvia. Even though sandy would like to know some...
