The Day That Changed My Life
Aric Trujillo
The Day That Changed My Life For years in my life graduating from High School had been a date circled in my mind. For me graduating High School meant I could then do whatever I wanted to do without anyone telling me right from wrong. As I got older I began to realize that everything I had thought before was now totally wrong. I realized that graduating High School meant I was going to have to be more responsible there I ever had before. It now made me realize that I had to become an adult and becoming an adult meant that I could not do whatever I wanted like I had thought and hoped before. On the morning of graduation day I woke up to a nice hot breakfast that was made by my dad. My mood was somewhat altering between being happy and upset. When I saw my mom that morning she looked sad and also like she had been crying because this big day had finally come. My mother had always told me before that when it came time for me to graduate she would be devastated. My mom is a very emotional person so of course she was pretty devastated all day leading up to the ceremony. What made my mom sad about the day was that I was her oldest child. The day was going to be busy, cleaning and straightening up the house, since we were hosting a pre graduation dinner at my house for all of my family members that were going to be attending the graduation later that evening. A few hours of cleaning the house for the dinner went by when I decided to just sit back and relax and think about the huge step in life that I would soon be taking. I sat around thinking about all my grade school years and all the friends that I had met and realized that my high school years were about to be over and finished with. As the time kept getting closer and closer the thought of graduating was beginning to strike a bit of fear within me. I had taken all of my high school years for granted. I never took time to think about what I was going to do with my life after school.

I had set many types of goals for myself this year including making friends, helping others and being a part of the most incredible organization, Blue Guards. Blue Guards was not only a drill team, it was a family, a family of girls and boys working together, leading others, having discipline, and respecting each other as a team. Last year had to by far be the toughest year for me in high school. I grew away from many people that I considered some of my closest friends. I also suffered academically because I began to spend less time doing work and being focused on less important things. I got caught up in unnecessary drama, went on my first college visits, and met new people in the matter of one year. Not only did I grow as a person, I grew as an athlete, I grew as a sibling, and I grew as a young woman. My junior year allowed me to develop my expectations for myself in life and my expectations for the people who I choose to surround myself with. This was the year that I decided who I would want to become in the future.…

One day, while I was laying peacefully on my bed, my mother came in with a letter from Florida A&M University. I didn't really want to speculate anything because a few days before I received a letter from another college saying that I wasn't accepted. Nevertheless I was still excited when I opened it and even more so when I read that I had been accepted. So without much hesitation I packed up and headed to Tallahassee. When I arrived my mother and I took care of registration and a plethora of things you have to manage as a new student. After all the hassles of college registration were completed my mother departed for home and I was left by myself to attend college. What a great feeling! Little did I know what I had on store for the next day, my first in college.…

Coming into high school ready to have the time of my life was a little over rated. I was 14 turning 15 and was not interested in much and now needing to have an answer to those inevitable questions What college are you going too? or What career are you planning to pursue? All of these questions put an immense weight in my shoulders and the only thing on my mind back then was whether or not I will be able to afford the latest Call Of Duty title. Up to that point I had not thought of what I was going to do. On top of that I was quickly losing all of my middle school pals until I figured it all out. Adulthood was just around the corner and I could not be worried about these people no more. I had to grow up and not impress the people around…
