1 The text identifies six common myths about the poor (page 146). List these myths and the list data that refute them. MYTH 1 “People are poor because they are lazy and refuse to work”. The economy has made jobs disappear and poverty rates increase, however this does not account for the people that are lazy or refuse to work as is the case of a large number of people who don't have a job. In many occasions people are overqualified for a regular job, but they are not qualified to do another one. This means that they possess the knowledge and experience, and are rejected for being too experienced for the job. Some other people do not have a professional license and cannot do the respective job. In many other cases people don’t work because they are sick and don't have health insurance. MYTH 2 “Must Poor people are minorities”.
I have no idea what these myths are based on, however, I think there is a mistake to classify African Americans or Latinos as accounting for most poor. This accounts for racial discrimination. African Americans and Latinos come from different races and cultures as well as different social and economic levels. Many of the African American ancestors came to the US as slaves. These people were part of indigenous tribes with little to no education and live in very different circumstances. As for Latinos, many have come here looking for a job. Some others have come for education for their kids and for peace and solitude. Finally, where I live is hard to find a homeless person that is Latino or Black. MYTH 3 “Most Poor people live in inner cities”.
The reason why people that are poor go to inner cities is because there are more possibilities of work and public transportation is better. Myth 4 “Most of the poor are single mothers”.
