The Crucible: #3 In the book The Crucible, there were many displays of courage, weakness, and truth. Many characters showed these signs, but only a few stood out to me. I believe John Proctor showed the most courage. As of weakness, I think that I would have to say that both John and Elizabeth Proctor showed a lot of this. Finally for truth, I would give it to Danforth. One way John Proctor showed courage was by speaking up to Reverend Parris when everyone else was to afraid to. Not only that, he confesses to the affair that he had with Abigail in order to save Elizabeth’s life, and also chose to be hung so that he would not be looked down upon while his name was on the church door. He is very open minded and is not afraid to speak what he thinks. An example of this is in his house talking to Hale when he was questioning John about not going to church. John tells Hale that he does not like Parris and sees no light of God in that man. Abigail despises Elizabeth for being Proctor's wife, and for keeping Proctor's heart. Elizabeth wants John to stay with her so she does anything and everything so that John does not leave her. Elizabeth feels that John's affair is due to her own faults and that she is not able to please him. Proctor shows that he is a courageous man but still somewhat weak by having an affair with Abigail Williams. There is not a lot of truth in this story, but if I had to choose someone, it would be Danforth. All he wants is the truth, but there are so many lies that it is hard for him to figure out the fact from fake. The person who he trust to tell the truth is Abigail (who is the main

I would say that John Proctor is the most courageous character because he speaks up for himself when talking to Reverend. Most importantly he sticks with his beliefs. He confessed about having an affair with Abigail just so his wife wouldn’t be killed. He tries to please Elizabeth as much as possible because of he is left with a guilty conscience. He chose to be hung instead of living in shame. He would always think of others before he thought of himself. He no longer cared about being hanged because he knew he was a sinner and shouldn’t have done what he did. He tried saving others over himself. Throughout the whole story John helped out others when it would put himself in risk. Out of all the people I would easily say that John Proctor…

In the article "Witch-Hunting, Thwarted Desire, and Girl Power: Arthur Miller's The Crucible by Karen Bovard, Bovard talks how people fight to gain power in the hysteria of the witch trials. Abigail Williams leads the girls into accusing people and turns people against each other. Mary Warren tires to stand up and tell the truth but fails. Male ministers and judges fight for power. Proctor and Abigail have an affair that starts the turning of friends against friends by the towns’ people accusing others of being witches. Bovard says that it is interesting that no young men have interest in Abigail, except a married one. Proctor and Abigail’s relationship could be seen as harassment because Abigail worked for the Proctors in their home as a maid. Proctor’s wife Elizabeth knows about Abigail’s desire for Proctor before the affair even starts. She knows that Abigail want to replace her, in her home and bed. Another desire is of Ann Putnam who has lost 7 children during childbirth and she starts to accuse her neighbors of witchcraft. She accuses Rebecca Nurse, who has had many children and grandchildren and out of jealousy Ann accuses Rebecca. When girls are found dancing they are thought to be posed by the devil and then they fall ill and everyone thinks it was the devil and witchcraft. Bovard also makes the comparison about how slaves in Barbados and the town misfits are accused of witchcraft because they are easy to accuse and easy to bring down. And they accused people by what they were. More women with accused and race were also an issue.…

Sarena Knoop Mrs. Cox English 10 4 September 2014 John Proctor - Tragic Hero A tragic hero is a very favored person that suffers from a downfall which leads to their death. John Proctor like many others is a tragic hero. Proctor is a very respected man in Salem but he also has a few flaws that have proved him to be a tragic hero which are prideful, lustful, and well respected. Later in the play The Crucible, Proctor realizes his flaws and tries to fix them but it is too late. One of Proctors tragic flaws is that he was prideful. While Proctor is in jail, his wife Elizabeth tries to convince him to sign off on his innocents, but his pride gets in the way and he was hanged. One of the things Proctor says to prove his pride fullness is, "I have confessed myself! Is there no good penitence but it be public? God does not need my name nailed upon the church! God sees my name; God knows how black my sins are! It is enough!" (Miller 142). This part in the play is a very good example showing that John Proctor is a tragic hero. The quote explains to us that he knows what he did wrong, but he is also prideful about his name being ruined when that's all he has. Another example is when Proctor said, "Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name?" (Miller 143). Proctor realizes that he is trying to keep his name clean, so that his kids do not have to be judged for it. Proctor finds it easier to die for his name, then live and be judged everywhere he goes. As an adult Proctor had to make those decisions for the better which led to his death, but Proctor is prideful was one of many. A second tragic flaw that Proctor has is lust. Proctor lusts after his house servant while his wife is sick. Abigail then states, "I know how you clutched my back behind your house and sweated like a stallion whenever i come near! Or did I…

In the play "The Crucible" written by Arthur Miller, the author displays how easily people can make judgments based on their personal beliefs rather than rational and logical reasoning. Miller elucidates throughout the play that truth has no meaning when men believe only what they want to believe. A situation is created where there are factors capable of forcing characters into making assessments based on what they think is right while disregarding the truth. Three characters in Miller's play who abandon the truth because they choose to believe only what they want to believe are Reverend Parris, Reverend John Hale and Judge Danforth.…
