In their return to Marseille, Fernand accused Edmond for treason and was sent to Chateau d’If where he was exiled for years. Edmond met a priest that was imprisoned for not knowing where his Count’s fortune was hidden. The priest taught him economics, literature, statistics, philosophy, mathematics and many more. While digging through the tunnels, the caves gave-in making the priest mortally wounded, the priest tells Edmond where he hid the count’s treasure then died abruptly. With the treasure he had, Edmond became the Count of Monte Cristo. He successfully killed his first mate, the magistrate and his best friend Frenand but couldn’t kill Mercédès. Edmond returned to Chateau d’If to pay his respect and thanks to the priest and promises to give up on revenge.
