The Consequences of Every Action

I. Theme: Actions have consequences.

A. “I hope you’re ready, because I’m about to tell you the story of my life. More specifically, why my life ended. And if you’re listening to these tapes, you’re one of the reasons why.” (II 5-7) 1. Hannah Baker is explaining to the people who will receive these tapes that their actions had attributed to her suicide. 2. Hannah explains that it was more then one person who led her to suicide and they must know the whole story behind it. B. “A rumor based on a kiss ruined a memory that I hoped would be special. A rumor based on a kiss started a reputation that other people believed in and reacted to. And sometimes, a rumor based on a kiss has a snowball effect.” (II 30-31)

1. Hannah Baker explains how the ignorance of others led to the tarnished reputation of her first kiss with Justin Foley. 2. The rumors and gossip about Hannah’s first kiss was the beginning of her troubles and just the start of the build up that led to her suicide. C.“But it’s more than just a scratch. It’s a punch in the stomach and a slap in the face. It’s a knife in my back because you would rather believe some made-up rumor than what you knew to be true.” (II 68) 1. Regardless of the fact that Jessica Davis was Hannah’s friend, she ruined their friendship over her jealousy that Hannah was voted “Best ass in the freshman class.” A title that Hannah wasn’t even proud to have. 2. Once again Hannah was emotionally torn by the words of other people, even though she had no control over the situation. D. “And what about you-the rest of you-did you notice the scars you left behind?”(II 68) 1. Hannah is referring to the emotional scars that were left from all the gossip and rumors spread about her. 2. People may think that Jessica Davis was the only one to leave a scar on Hannah, but in reality everyone did, even if the scars were not visible. Sometimes emotional scars can be worse then physical scars. II....
