with a clear purpose, involving
the sending and receiving of
messages as a way of sharing
ideas and experiences.”

“… the transmission of a
message from a sender to a
receiver in an understandable
manner.”

PRINCIPLES OF
COMMUNICATION
Any definition of
communication is based on
general truths or doctrine,
that is principles, used as a
basis of reasoning or a guide
into action.

- Inevitable/irreversible Sure to happen
- Involves content and
relationship
- Happens in a setting or
context[these are varied]

What is the Communication
Process ?
It is the guide towards realizing
effective communication.

There are six elements:

Communication elements:
Context means setting/environment:


Location – physical place

Time – day, month, year,
era

Culture – race,
ethnicity, nations ,
communities

Relationships family, friends, coworkers

Occasion – physical &
psychological climates

Communicators


Sender/Encoder/Source
–In our context refers to
people; humans are
always the originators of
a message [individual,
group 0r organization]



Receiver/Decoder/Audie
nce – they are the
ultimate goal or
destination of a
message; they are
needed to translate the
message finally into a
form that people can
comprehend

Messages


Messages – These
are the content of
the communication
process. They may
be verbal [written or
spoken] or nonverbal
[everything else,
from gestures and
movements to smell
and objects]
Messages can be
transmitted through
the use of
media/channels.

Channel/Medium


Channel/Medium:
The form of the
message or the
vehicle for sending
it; the means
through which the
message is delivered
such as televisions,
podcasts, tele/videoconferencing, ebooks, letters,
interviews, emails,
facsimiles, skits,
songs etc.

Feedback


Feedback – The
response(s) or signal(s)
the receiver sends to the
sender. The types are
VERBAL or
NONVERBAL; that is,
“they may take the form
of a spoken comment, a
long sigh, a written
message, a smile, or
some other action.
Sometimes the message
requires no obvious
response or feedback,
which in itself is a
response if that was
what the sender
expressed!” (Rochford,
2008)

Describing the process
SENDER’S ROLE:
Conceptualization: the birthing of the
sender’s ideas or concepts which form
the message; information comes from
sender’s field of experience
 Encoding: translating information into
a message in the form of symbols that
represent ideas or concepts to convey
meaning (denotative/connotative)
 Selection of mediums/channels:
choosing a means to transmit the
message


Describing the process
RECEIVER’S ROLE:
Decoding: deconstructing
information sent by sender
Interpretation: the
understanding of the meaning of
the information received
Feedback: responding in some
way through use of signals

Barriers to
Communication


Barriers are blockages, interferences or noises
to interaction. They can be external or internal
and can occur at every stage of the process:
