The color purple has many examples of how poorly black women were treated. Black men had control over black women because, they didn’t do much about it. Alice Walker gives many examples of how black women were untreated and how they were abused by black men. Throughout the novel “The Color Purple” gives many examples of how black women felt in their lives. According to Celie she felt used, betrayed, abused, disgusted, she was not feeling like herself.

Celie’s mother was a very ill women. She was mistreated by her husband, the man Celie thought was her father but really was her step-father. After awhile Celie knew her mother wasn’t going to resist any longer. Celie had to do what her mother couldn’t do anymore. Days later Celie’s mother passed away. “she say it too soon Fonso, I aint well” (walker 1). Celies step father wanted to force her mother into doing things she didn’t want to do, she already had enough children. She didn’t want to and he was trying to force her. Celies mother was already very sick from all her pregnancy’s that she wouldn’t be able to take another one. “He just say you gonna do what your mammy wouldn’t” (Walker1). So since Celie’s mother wouldn’t do it, he took his anger out on Celie and took advantage of her. He raped Celie. Celies father forced her into being with him. Celie was another victim of his violations, just like her mother was. She didn’t deserve everything that happened to her. The story of her mother was just repeating the story on Celies life. She was just a child, she was only a 14 year old girl.

Black men usually had control over black women because of the fact that black women would do nothing about it to stop all the violence and abuse against women. It was said that back in the days black men ruled black women. “All Black men are portrayed as fools, the women are portrayed as noble and long-suffering.
