The Church of Latter-day Saints and Protestant Christianity;
Two Diverse Faiths with a Shared Past.
The amount of information available for the Church of Latter-day Saints and Protestant Christianity are vast and sometimes complicated. To fully understand these two faiths, one can use the instrument of comparison to examine further into the doctrines. Both of these religions were derived from the same belief system, yet many would argue that they are far different from each other. Those that are members of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the many Protestant Christian faiths, often have indirect arguments about the differences of their religious structure. The fact is there are many more similarities in these two religions then there are variations, but that does not make much of an argument for rivalries sake. Often religions spend great amounts of energy persuading its followers to have negative viewpoints of other faiths to protect the size of their present and future congregations. The Latter-day Saint and Protestant Christian churches’ view on God and their view of religious texts will be examined to give a better idea about how these two belief systems contrast.
Often criticized, the first glance at the Mormon churches view of God seems far more complicated and detailed than the Protestant Christian’s. The most controversial of the beliefs of the Mormon Church is that which Brigham Young wrote in the Journal of Discourses, “How many Gods there are, I do not know. But there never was a time when there were not Gods” (7.333). This clearly represents a point of view, from the famous successor of Joseph Smith, that there is more than one god in Heaven. This causes a major rift between the two faiths due to the vast majority of Protestant churches belief in a singular God.
