Abstract

Within this extended essay, it deals with the Chinese Communists Party’s triumph during the Chinese Civil War that lasted from 1945-1949. It undertakes a historical investigation of the causes of the Chinese Civil War, the beliefs and actions taken by the two political parties; Chinese Communists Party (CCP) and the Nationalist’s Party (KMT) and the outcomes of the war. More specifically, this investigation deals with the success of the CCP’s triumph, examining the question: Evaluate the reasons for the success of Mao and the communists gaining support during the Chinese Civil War.

The scope of the extended essay is restricted to the long-term reasons for the success of gaining support, as the immediate reasons are not investigated. In addition, the essay does not go into specific details on the general history of the war such as the causes of the war and the significant events that happened during the war. Therefore, in order to examine this research question, both primary and secondary sources are required to use to evaluate the reasons of this in order to fully evaluate the reasons for the success of the CCP.

The investigation undertaken leads to the conclusion that the reasons for the success of the CCP gaining support included the ability to gain support from the majority of the population, the ability to take advantage of KMT weaknesses and along with their complete dedication during the years.

Introduction

In April 1927, it marked the beginning towards the eruption of the Chinese Civil War which was fought between the Kuomintang (KMT or Chinese Nationalist Party) and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The KMT was led by Chiang Kai-Shriek while the communists were led by Mao Zedong. However, as the nationalists were more powerful than the communists, they were forced to retreat north into The Long March (1927-1937). During the Long March, Mao and the communists were able to regain its power. Towards the end, the communists were able to defeat the KMT, leading to the independence of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.

The history of the Chinese Civil War has been considered a significant historical event that happened in China as it led to the establishment of today’s People’s Republic of China. To evaluate in specifically the reasons for the victory of Mao and the Chinese Communists Party is very interesting. This reasoning lies upon the previous knowledge on this historical event. Mao and the communists were once defeated, however being able to find and evaluate the reasons for the victory of the CCP at last, it does not only show the capability of creating a better understanding of how the Chinese Civil War was fought between both sides, regarding to the advantageous of the tactics that led the CCP to victory but also, how wars in general were fought in terms of strategies.
