The Changeling by Robin Jenkins

Choose a novel which reaches a climax which you find dramatic or moving or disturbing.
Explain how the writer achieves this effect and discuss how it contributes to your appreciation of the text as a whole.

In Robin Jenkins “The Changeling” the main character Tom Curdie is a young boy who is faced with the feeling of not belonging in any environment, and therefore makes a very sad and disturbing decision of how to solve his problem. Tom’s build up to making this decision is highlighted throughout the whole book, and then reaches the disturbing climax at the end of the novel. Jenkins’ effective use of characterisation and climax build up to and highlight the horrible ending, and also adds to my appreciation of the theme of belonging.

Tom Curdie is a young boy who lives in the east-end of Glasgow and is from a very deprived background. However, his English teacher Charlie Forbes recognises that he has potential and offers to take him on holiday with his family to Towellan to give him the opportunity to see what life could be like for him if he works hard. Unfortunately, Tom eventually finds himself completely isolated when he realises that he does not belong in Charlie’s life yet he knows he can never return to his old life in Donaldson’s Court. He runs away and although

The fate of the universe is on his shoulders, and he is not even in kindergarten yet. A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L’Engle is an amazing book that fills people with wonder and excitement, both about the characters and the exotic places. In the book Charles, Meg, and Calvin go on an adventure to find Charles Wallace’s, and Meg’s father. While trying to fight for their father they are also trying to save the universe by destroying IT, a giant brain, which has an entire planet enslaved including their father. Charles Wallace is a curious character that always seems to have a question. He is “a blond little boy in faded blue Dr. Dentons, his feet swinging a good six inches above the floor.” (L’Engle pg. 12). Obviously Charles Wallace is the…

Aural imagery establishes the Brennan family’s sense of alienation in the prologue which is characterised by the manner in which, “No one spoke” and “only the sounds of our feet shuffling” (pg1) could be heard as the Brennan family left their rural home town of Mumbilli. The audience is drawn into the prologue through ambiguity of which caused the Brennan’s sudden upheaval, however is assured as the station wagon slinks “past the ugly words that told us that we were no longer wanted.” (pg1) that this family who had previously enjoyed social acceptance was now enduring castigation. Burke foreshadows Tom’s transition in the prologue with the closing of the door to Tom’s old house symbolising the end of Tom’s old life and the beginning of Tom’s new life. Tom’s attitudes and beliefs about himself are noticeably fractured by his family’s forced relocation to Coghill, evident in the metaphorical language of, “the black curtain” which reflects Tom’s depression that acts as a barrier and blocks his transition. Burke, in Tom Brennan displays how reckless behaviour as a rite of passage in a rural communal paradigm can act as a catalyst for a multitude of consequences including an individual’s loss of belief in oneself and how this can lead to a deeper understanding of oneself and the actions of…

Secondly, Meursault's attitude and reaction toward an offer to be relocated to a Parisian location was a monumental indicator of his insensitivity. One would expect him to accept or decline the offer graciously and respectfully. Meursault proved, again, to be unpredictable when he states, in regard to his then current life in Paris: "...it was all the same to me" (Camus 41). Caught off-guard by his response, Meursault's boss asked yet another question: was Meursault interested in a change of life? Unmoved, Meursault further retorted that one life was as good as another, and, furthermore, he wasn't unhappy with his current life in any way. Meursault's boss screamed at him, crying that Meursault never gave him a straight answer and had no ambition; his boss sad both of which were…
