Do you have an interest in suspenseful novels? If so, then the book The Cay, by Theodore Taylor, is right for you. In the story Philip is a twelve year old boy living on the Dutch island Curacao with his family during 1942 while the war is going on. After a shipwreck trying to get off the island, he is separated from his mother and then washed on shore a cay with an old black man named Timothy. The protagonist, Phillip, has to learn a lot from Timothy. After a blow to the head he loses his sight and Phillip is left blind in more ways then one.

Taylor provides a lot of background to what’s going on in the story and still keeps his focus. He covers details about the war and other facts about the islands themselves. He has done all this and still provided dynamic characters that any reader could get attached to. Considering the story is based on true events Taylor definitely had standards to live up to in his writing and he surpassed even those set by Philip himself.

The books characters are in-depth, Phillip learns to live with nature in an all too real situation with no time to cope. He makes many mistakes like any child would make in his mistakes it shows Taylor’s skill in capturing a real person inside a character. All of his characters have this kind of dimension. This book is based on a true story that Taylor heard about and he shows that he knows what readers like and how to capture a story.

In the time period that this book was set in, the two characters would not have socially been together. Philip has predetermined thoughts at first about Timothy but when In the end, it shows that Philip’s prejudices can be set aside. timothy and Phillip grow a bond and love each other after getting along became a matter of survival. Near the end of the book Philip says, “I had now been with him every moment of the day and night for two months, but I had not seen him. I remembered that ugly welted face.
