The Causes of Stress Among University Students
Topic: The Causes of Stress Among University Students.

Students’ life on campus revolves around going to classes, studying in the library or in their own room, getting involved in co-curricular activities made compulsory by the university and sometimes hanging out with their friends at a mall to have fun after an exam. Life as a university student basically demands a good time management on the part of the student. Being away from their family will require them to be independent and some students need quite some time to get adjusted to their new environment or they will be homesick or stressed. There are some causes of stress among university students. Among the causes are a lot of assignments, homesickness, and financial problem.

The first cause of stress among university students is a lot of assignments. Sometimes, the students need to finish three or four assignments and submit them at the same times. Thus, the students will not have enough time to concentrate on the assignments as they also need to do other things such as attending classes and getting involved in co-curricular activities. Thus, the students will be stressed because of lack of time to finish the assignments. Some assignments are group assignments that need to be done with other students. If every group member cannot give their full commitment to do the assignments together, the students will be stressed too. If the assignments are not properly done, again the students will feel stressed. Thus, a lot of assignments can be one of the causes of stress among university students.

Secondly, being away from their family, university students will feel homesick. The students can become homesick because they miss their family and they still cannot adapt to their new environment at the university. As a result, they will feel stressed because maybe they keep thinking about going home to see their family. Besides, they will not be able to concentrate on their studies especially when their family is celebrating a birthday at home that they think they are being ignored by their family. Therefore, they will be stressed and maybe some students will want to quit their studies at the university. As mentioned before, homesickness can be one of the causes of stress among university students.

The third cause of stress among university students is the students’ financial problem. As we all know, studying at the university require a lot of money. For students who do not come from a rich family, probably they will have some problems in buying text books, paying the cost of their photocopies, tuition fees and so on. Thus, if they do not have enough money to pay for all these, they will be stressed. Some students work part-time while studying at the university to support their staying on campus. Working part-time while studying will make the students really busy as they need to go to classes and maybe go to work after class apart from going to the library, attending meetings with other students, finishing assignments and so on. A tight schedule like that will make the students stressed. Thus, financial problem can be a reason for stress among university students.

In conclusion, there are three causes of stress among university students such as their many assignments, homesickness, and financial problem. University students need to be aware of these reasons for their stress as stress is detrimental. Proper time and money managements can help prevent the students from becoming stressed. Also, self-motivation is important to be built so that the students will be aware of their coming to the university that is to further their studies. What is more important is: prevention is better than cure and thus stress should be avoided before it is faced by the students.
