Extra Credit – PBS Frontline Video
PBS Frontline Video, “The Card Game” is very cleverly named as it is a video of how consumers and banks have dug such a deep hole of debt that is affecting the economy due to playing a gambling game will loans, credit, etc. I actually am glad that this video was brought to my attention as I have never fully understood where credit card companies and banks got their fees and limits from. I personally have experienced the exact thing this video was trying to point out, and was “taken advantage” of with credit card companies hiding fees and/or not clearly stating what I was going to be charged for or what my interest rate was. When I got my first credit card, I was a college student and was given the low interest rate spill. I don’t remember exactly what it started out as but I clearly remember missing a payment and the interest rate sky-rocketing to 28%. I never realized how much money I basically threw in the garbage (but now know it was just putting money into the banks pocket) by paying my minimum balance due. As I’ve gotten older and started paying better attention to my finances, I realized that I was in fact paying more on interest and fees than I was toward my balance. It took me over 6 years to pay off a $600 credit limit. I agree with the video that banks should be more forthcoming with telling the consumers what they will charge, how high your interest rate will go, and what you have to do to make the changes take place. I do not agree with hiding terms in the small font that most never read, or even if they did they probably would not be able to understand. The economy and amount of welfare participants I think has gotten to where it is with a big part being consumer debt. The poor were given such a big opportunity to get themselves in holes, and in turn made the rich richer. I do not think the government should completely step in as this is a commodity and users should

The puzzle game is a short story written by Patricia D. Maida and Nicholas B Spornick. This short story explains the reasoning behind almost all detective stories. The puzzle game demonstrates how all detective stories follow a “puzzle tradition” that produce the reader with intrigue and intellectual stimulation. The puzzle games found in detective stories operate on multiple levels with varying complexities derived by an ingenious author. These games follow many variations and rules, but will never allow you to fully comprehend who the victim, the murder, and sometimes even who the sleuth is in the story. Two fascinating detective stories that follow the format of the puzzle game are “Silver Blaze” by Conan Doyle, and “The mysterious Affair” bye Christies.…

The CARD act of 2009, restricted credit card companies from raising interest rates on existing balances. It also prevented credit card companies from charging a fee for exceeding their borrowing limit unless these customers had explicitly requested this service. It also made it more difficult for credit card companies to target those under 21 years of age- since they now had to provide either proof of parental consent or proof of financial capability.…

The Outcasts of Poker Flat is a short story filled with connotations of redemption and imbued with an incredible kind of misconception that only the most arrogantly self-righteous could conceive. Its primary purpose is to act as a cautionary tale about a seemingly respectable judgment that unjustly condemns four people to their untimely ends. Harte’s story is set in an 1800’s settlement brimming with discord and mistrust. After a series of very unfortunate events the townspeople decide to exile the “undesirables” of the town. And so, Harte’s ragtag group of outcasts are thrown together in a dire bid for survival. In the beginning the reader is only made aware of the labels Poker Flat had given the refugees and thus inevitably forms a negative…

America is a country of true convenience and consumerism. In this country of opportunity, the very well established credit industry allows people who only earn fifty thousand dollars a year to purchase and “own” two hundred and fifty thousand dollar homes and thirty thousand dollar cars. We pay over time to enjoy or conveniences and lives now. In developing economies, this is very far from the case. Take Jamaica for example where very little is done on credit. In the past decade the nation implemented tax identification numbers which is the same as social security numbers here. But establishing credit there is very complicated and nothing as streamlined as we have in the United States. As a result of this streamline industry, business and the economy in turn flourish from the interest rate and fees they earn from customers. The longer the loan terms, the more interest is earned and similarly the higher the interest rate that is charged. It is this high rate of return on providing credit that influences and pushes companies to try and squeeze as much as they can out of their customers. We see this daily and disturbingly more so now with the recession. One such company that is facing major hot water as a result of their unethical push of loan products, rates and fees is Countrywide.…

    Ascent Of Money

The lenders need to be compensated somehow and that is where interest comes in. The borrower receives the money with the intent to pay the interest and the loan back at a future date, the lender gains money off of the money lent and everyone is happy. Businesses and economies grow from the credit world. This documentary showed me how America was put in the situation we are in and I believe it is everyone’s doing. A lot of businesses and money transactions in the US are made for the ‘broke’ economy. There are companies that will lend money using equity from their cars as collateral, they have places that give advances on future paychecks, and if you have no more money or possessions to ‘borrow’ more money from, you can always sell your plasma. That bad debt is warned off and the collateral is sold off putting us more in debt. Americans walk away unpunished and are given try after try which leads to the economy being in debt. Americans are allowed to declare bankruptcy for personal reorganization where in other countries is held to a much higher consequence. During Roosevelt’s administration, the government gave incentives and monies to assist with purchasing a home and…

There are millions of people in this world whom own several credit cards. Some who actually watch what they spend, and others who are very careless. The interest rates on credit cards are what allow people to go into debt, and can’t get themselves out of it. People do not realize that the interest rate on the credit card keeps on going higher the more you purchase. Instead of individuals understanding that when you make a purchase that is truly needed and acknowledge that your interest rate is 25%, then do not make anymore purchases until you have paid off that item. The creditors are making a lot of money off of us consumers just in interest rate, and again this is what is leading us to debt. When making the…
