‘The Bluest Eye’ by Toni Morrison is a book about finding and accepting your true beauty. It is a novel that states; if we try and see through a different perspective, we might actually be able to find that we have the strength to accomplish whatever we want. The Breedlove’s- a poor, black family- can’t seem to overcome the obstacles life has made for them. They don’t know how to cope with everyday struggles. They don’t know how to get someone to listen to them, how to love someone, or how to become beautiful. The Breedlove’s can’t seem to find an answer to any of these points- and neither can the rest of the world.

How do you get someone to listen to you? This is a question Pauline Breedlove has asked herself many a times. ‘Domestic Abuse is a physical assault that is used by one person in a relationship to control the other.’ Morrison created characters such as Cholly and Pauline Breedlove, who would often fight verbally, and physically. ‘She needed Cholly’s sins desperately. The lower he sank, the wild more irresponsible he became, the more splendid she and her task became... No less did Cholly need her. She was one of the few things abhorrent to him that he could touch and therefore hurt...’ Morrison makes it clear that both characters Pauline and Cholly, need each other. She states that her characters abuse each other, because they think these actions give their lives meaning. They hurt each other as an excuse for excitement and revenge in their life. Similarly in 2009, 19 year old Chris Brown, was arrested for alleged domestic violence against his ex-girlfriend, 20 year old Robyn Rihanna Fenty. According to a February 9, 2009 article, she was found beaten in Brown’s car the night of the 2009 Grammy Awards. The couple were reportedly fighting over a text Brown received.
