The significance of Georgiana’s Birthmark is how she is human. “But never on yours. No, dearest Georgiana, you came nearly perfect from the hand of nature that this slightest possible defect, which we hesitate whether to term a defect or a beauty, shocks me, as being the visible mark of earthly imperfection.”(1022).in this statement Aylmer is saying that this birthmark is her one flaw that steers her away from perfection. Without the birthmark she would be perfect. Likewise Georgiana loves her birthmark it makes her who she is, as for Aylmer he is a scientist and thinks that things can be perfected through science. Also the birthmark shows how every human is unique in their own way. “To tell you the truth it has been so often called a charm that I was simple enough to imagine it might be so.”(1022) every person has a birthmark and it’s never the same shape or size each person’s birthmark is different. Georgiana’s just happens to be a crimson red mark shaped like a hand. Georgiana seems to think it’s not a big deal seeing though she said that she can cover it up with the slightest touch of her finger. In the birthmark nature is suppose to represent Georgiana. How girls have periods so that’s why the birthmark is red. The birthmark is showing how no one is allowed to be perfect and no one will ever be perfect. Shown on page (1024) it says that the mark was so deep that it reached her heart. This is symbolizing that Mother Nature put this birthmark there for a reason. And without the birthmark there will be no Georgiana. In conclusion the birthmark cannot be removed without the removal of Georgiana’s life. The birthmark represents nature and humans, how human beings have certain things that make them human beings. Likewise how nature places certain flaws or imperfections on us to symbolize or characterize that no human being will reach perfection. As well how we all our unique in our own way and how no personnel can be alike.
