The Best About Best Friends
“Isipin mo na lang best friend mo ko.” This is the text message I received from her which started it all. These words gave me the privilege to call Mikee “bes” and have her as my one and true best friend.

Best friends are the best when it comes to being an inspiration for improving oneself for the better. This is what Mikee made me realize. Although we’ve just been best friends for quite a short time, she already influenced me with her unique attitudes and characteristics. She’s one of the main reasons of what I am now and possibly, if our friendship goes on, what I’ll be in the future.

Our small friendship started when she became my partner in our school’s Seniors Promenade. She’s the perfect partner for me since she is just my neighbor and I knew her somehow from my childhood years. Since I’m part of the cotillion, it was during the Christmas break when the dance practices started. I thought it’s my job to entertain her during the practices so I had a really hard time thinking of what possible topics to talk about. But during the first day of practice, I realized that all my efforts of thinking were wasted as she immediately made friends with other girls whom she met for the first time. I find her quite weird for saying “Hi” and “Hello” to each people she met during the practice. It might be because I’m the total opposite of her. I’m the usual introvert boy who don’t want to interact with other people so much. But as I stared at her during those dancing days and saw her happily surrounded with friends, I began to admire her and ask myself if I had the guts to imitate that kind of personality.

The practice days were done and the night of the prom came. I can say that our practices paid off because we were able to dance the cotillion with only a few mistakes. Then the open- stage dance part came and all of the people gathered in the center and danced. I was quite sure of myself that I would spend almost all of the night sitting in a chair. But

My best friend Sedona Love taught me something this year, something I would never have had seen with my own two eyes until she showed me. She taught me that when I am having trouble at home or life isn’t treating me so well, that she will always be there to listen and give their best input. She may sometimes be sarcastic, silly, goofy, mean, crazy, sometimes plain out embarrassing, and even care too much, but in the long run she is always going to be there to listen and not talk, hear without judging, and be there with nothing in return. In class sometimes she can be pretty critical but I know that’s just how our relationship works. I may get called silly, stupid, a dumb blonde, an idiot, but when I need my best friend the most I know that she will be there for me. When I needed a shoulder to cry on or when I needed a hug the most she was always there for me, when I felt there was no sense in life she showed me there was way more to life than I thought. A couple of weeks ago I went into severe anaphylactic shock and she was right there, she brought me my backpack and the things I needed most at the time. She stood up for me when my so called friends were talking behind my back not really knowing what was going on. She was also the only one who cared enough to call me and see how I was doing, she put everything aside just so she could make sure that I was okay. Not…

When I made it to my junior year, I thought I had already made my friends for life. I was not necessarily open to new relationships, and I was not overly social. I did all of the same things and did not bother branching out. Hannah Hennings and I first bonded on the night of homecoming. Neither of us had dates so we danced the night away and just had fun together. After that, Hannah and I started to hang out more and more, bonding even more through speech. In February of 2016, Hannah and I both participated in individual speech. She was participating in the poetry category, and I was participating in the prose category. We both helped each other in practice and gave each other tips to get better. Hannah made it all the way to All-State Speech with that…

My freshman year in high school, I decided to join Best Buddies. Best Buddies is a program where a high school student is paired with another student, who has an intellectual and developmental disability, in a one-to-one friendship. During my first year, I learned Best Buddies is not simply a club but a family. My second year of being a part of Best Buddies I began truly noticing a change in myself. Sophomore year I was paired with a girl one year younger than me named Carrie. She and I have become best friends and have now been buddies for the past three years. As I interacted with Carrie these past years, I began to realize disabilities do not hold people back, but that we hold ourselves back. Despite Carrie’s misfortune, she wears a smile…

Upon joining my sorority earlier this semester I never would have thought I would be dancing and making a fool out of myself in front of hundreds of people on Green Street. Here I was though on November 1st, after practicing for at most three days with the other girls and Hockey team, ready to get on stage. My grand big is a dance major so she convinced me to join the Spurs and Struts team because they did not have enough people and I have a hard time saying no. This performance ended up being one of the scariest, but most fun experiences I have ever had. During Spurs and Struts I had lost my dance partner last minute so I had to dance a part alone. Also, I could not grab my rally towel that was tucked in my leggings so that was embarrassing…

My first day on the bus, I met a very important person to me. She would soon become the closest friend I would ever have. We shared a name, the interest in video games, and the hobby of drawing. But, other than that, we were very different. She liked white milk and hated chocolate (a.k.a “tainted milk”). I was the opposite. I enjoyed the company of dogs, she was obsessed with cats. But, differences aside, we enjoyed sitting together during lunch and just doodling all over each other's agendas and notebooks. We never really had any classes together, aside from homeroom together.…

Have you ever met the situation when you tell someone about something, and they were totally excited because they have completely agreement with you in that case? Yes, I have. Once I was doing Summer School, I had no friend in my class, I didn’t know anybody. There was a girl sitting beside me, and we didn’t really talk to each other until the third week. None of us ever started a topic to talk about. So one day, I felt it’s really been a long time since Summer School starts, I need some friends indeed! So I started with some random topics to talk about, and when I ask her what she likes to do in her spare time, I was amazed. She has the totally same interest as me, she likes playing softball and golf, and also she’s a newbie at those sports, and so am I! So we ended up hang out with each and play sports together sometime in the weekend. I would not have her as my friend if I never started talking with a sentence like “Hello, how are you?” We become very close since then, and even now we are still in touch, we sometimes hang out, go to movies. We have a lot in common to talk about.…

Each week I was filled with anticipation as I walked into the center. I enjoyed the tap part the most. There was excitement with the sound of tap dancing and a lot of girls’ voices. Everyone had their little black, shiny tap shoes on tapping their little shoes on the dance floor. The voices I listened for were Ms. Patty and Ms. Bobby. They were going to teach us how to tap dance. We learned about the different tap sounds. Toe, heel tap, step, and touch were some of the sounds with one step. Then there came the steps with two sounds like the ball heel and the shuffle. I was so excited that I was learning all these different steps. By the time we learned all these different moves the dance recital was around the…
