Hammurabi was an emperor that ruled in 1792 to 1750 B.C. In the 3,000 B.C. there were people called Sumerians. They were the first inhabitants of the area. They were a city – state!! There were some threats in this area! One was hostile invaders. To be protected by this threat, they built strong, high walls!

All of the Sumerians believe in gods!! The most favorite gods they have is Enlil, and Utu!! They control the sun and rain!! Each city – state would build a temple for each god!! The temple they would build would be built on a pyramid-shaped tower called a ziggurat.

Sometimes other kings would conquer other city-states. Then sometimes they would let the conquered cities to keep working for their own special god! Soon local rulers could not look to their god for advice. Now they had to listen to their emperor. They let ruling families and temple priest keep local control.

Mesopotamia had a class system! This meant that the society was divided into different social groups! The most favored class had more rights than anyone else. There were three classes, Kings, priest, and wealthy property owners. The middle class included skilled workers, merchants and farmers.

Only the wealthy had the money to send their kids to school. About all of the kids that went to school were boys but some were girls. Their school would start at sunrise and end at sunset. Students would get punished by “ the man in charge of the whip”. There were about 600 characters the kids had to memorize!!!!
