The Age of Military Aviation
One of the defining prominence’s of the twentieth Century was the creation and use of aircraft in the military for warfare. Military aviation is the use of aircraft and other flying machines for the intent of guiding or empowering warfare, including cargo capability to support logistical supply to forces stationed in the field or along a front. The eminent value of aviation in the military changed the twentieth century in the way people saw and experienced war and life. It opened the doorway for this country and others for opportunities to take the lead and become super powers of the world.
Some worldviews of aircrafts before WWI was that aviation was great for recreation and travel, but never as an instrument of war. The time and money to use planes would not be worth it. Most nations were still not convinced and simply not ready for any aerial combat. However, one nation, Europe had taken an early lead in the development and manufacturing of aircraft. Millions of dollars were invested in the program, which led to thousands of aircraft being built from German, French, and British firms. During this time the U.S. firms had built less than a hundred. America simply did not obtain enough support and funding to keep up with the high demand and pace of its European counterparts (Gross 288). However, as time went on the United States government was convinced that such a program was worth the investment. This inspired President Wilson in selecting George Squier, an early innovator and supporter of the aviation program as a National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) member. With his skillful knowledge and expertise he became a leading member of the NACA (known as NASA now) and played a significant role in establishing agreements between the automobile and aviation industries.
