The Affirmative Action Programs of Corning Inc., Gannett Co., Inc, and Xerox

      “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”   It is essential all Americans be given an opportunity to be equal by offsetting the discrimination that has existed for many years and is still present today.   “It is the right of the people to alter” this discrimination.   Critics of affirmative action erroneously believe the program incorporates quotas for unqualified applicants and reverse discrimination, but in actuality affirmative action programs lead to superior ingenuity and innovation from diverse and distinct perspectives in corporations such as, Corning, Gannett, and Xerox.
      Affirmative action is a policy that helps corporations discover employees from around the world by actively recruiting a diverse workforce.   When it is effectively used, the policy will ultimately reflect the population of the nation with its workforce in all levels, both in gender and in ethnicity.   Affirmative action in corporations is not only morally valid, but it is also socially and economically viable in order to improve our society and civilization as a whole.   Viewpoints against the policy will be analyzed and addressed and an argument in favor of affirmative action programs will also be presented.   The hiring process will also be examined by specifically looking at how the aforementioned corporations handle their affirmative action programs.
      Opponents define affirmative action as quotas, which help less qualified minorities and/or women get hired over more qualified white males.   Quotas, they argue, “deny opportunity to individuals solely because they are not members of a preferred race or ethnic group” (Canady 29) and that preferences, based on previous prejudice, “do nothing to help develop the skills necessary for...
