There are two different types of MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus). The first most common and most thought of is HA-MRSA (Healthcare-associated Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).Also known as “Staph.” It is most common contracted in Hospitals and health-care facilities, such as long-term Care facilities. This particular type is typically contracted when someone is in the hospital or has had surgery within the past year.
The next type is CA-MRSA (Community-associated Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) this is typically seen more in healthy people such as athletes and other adults who share equipment, towels or razors. It is also occurring more and more in children in daycare facilities and in school.
The cause of MRSA is, everyone carries some of it on the outside of the skin and 20%-30% of healthy people have it in their noses and in the back of their throats, and may never show signs of it. Although, the least little scratch can allow “Staph” to enter our bodies, and then show up on the outer skin as an infection. It may appear as a boil and is often misdiagnosed as a spider bite. Healthy people can also breakout with “Staph”. You may be at risk if you play contact sports, share towels or other personal items, or if you have a compromised immune, HIV, Cancer, are in chemo treatment live in close quarters like a dorm room. MRSA can be transmitted in several different ways (direct and indirect contact) as I have outlined here.
Some of the signs of MRSA are, a red bump filled with pus, warmth, red, and tender around the infected skin lesion(s). There are a few ways a doctor can determine if it is HA-MRSA or CA-MRSA. One way will be after the patient has been on an antibiotic for several days and they may not show any signs of improvement. Another way is for them to do different cultures including skin, urine, sputum, blood, and of the fluid from the site of infection.
