Chapter 1
Introduction
Background of the study
Xavier University High School, Ateneo de Cagayan is the home of excelled students. Here, they are formed to be culturally Integrated, Christ-Centered, Committed, Compassionate, and Competent. With these values inside each of the students, they can serve their parents and live their lives seeking the Magis. This school is composed of students with different culture, traditions, family backgrounds and personality. And one of these are those students who live without their parents. The Parents of these students, whom they look up as their heroes, works hard to send their children into this prestigious school. Since their children are located here in the Philippines, living in abroad is very hard for the both parties that is why distance is a very big problem for them. Since this problem gets bigger and bigger, this study is about how students are affected by the absence of parents.

Statement of the Problem
This study will attempt to answer the reasons behind the failure of students, whose parents are working abroad. Here are the following questions: 1. What is the profile of respondents when grouped according to: 1.1 Gender

2. What are the Factors that affect the student’s academic performance?

3. Does the absence of parents affect the performance of Senior Students? 3.1 First Quarter Grade Range
3.2 Second Quarter Grade Range
3.3 Change in the Grade Range from First Quarter to the Second Quarter.

Significance of the Study
This study seeks to find out the academic performances of students who have OFW parents. Thus, this study will benefit the following: * Students - who have parents working abroad, realize how hard and how much sacrifices their parents put-up to just to give them a good life. * Parents - that they may understand what their child is going through growing-up without their presence. * Teachers - that they may know why students fail, or have failing marks despite the fact that they are well provided with their needs. And that they may be aware and more attention to students who have such case. * Friends and Family - that they may be aware of the situation of which the student is going through and that they would be ready to be there, to comfort and provide support morally and emotionally to him or her. * Future researchers - that they may have a guide to follow, improve the scope of this research and most importantly to correct the flaws of researchers.

Scope and limitations of the study
The coverage of the study is only limited to two factors or areas. The average grade (QPI) of the Senior student’s batch 2012-2013 of Xavier University High School, while the other area will cover the factors that affect the self esteem of the senior students of Xavier University High School – Ateneo de Cagayan This...
