THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Successful adjustment of high school students during their high school years is an area of increasing concern for most institutions of higher education. The transition from elementary is a major life change for many adolescents. Entering secondary education may mean getting new learning experiences and opportunities for psychological development. At the same time, students may find high school life stressful because of the increasing academic demands and the establishment of new social relations. Academic adjustment or how well students deal with educational demands, includes motivation to complete academic work, success in meeting academic requirements, academic effort and satisfaction with the academic environment. Previous studies have shown the relationship between several psychological factors with student adjustment in high school which includes self-esteem and emotional intelligence.
The term adjustment is often used as a synonym for accommodation and adaption. It is used to emphasize the individual’s struggle to along or survive in his or her social and physical environment.
Good states that adjustment is the process of finding and adopting modes of behavior suitable to the environment or the changes in the environment.
New school can bring a feeling of awkwardness and uneasiness for most students. Thus the problem on academic adjustments if not being address well will cause new students to transfer to another school.
The major finding of the study of Raju and Rahantulla in their study Adjustment Problems among school students shows that the adjustments the students is primarily dependent on school variables: classroom set-up, medium of instructions, types of instructions.
