Living in the United States, it’s hard to imagine what life would be like living under a dictatorship. Typically you would picture lack of privacy, no freedom of speech, and genocide. An oppressed group of people. I’ve taken three books: Animal Farm, 1984, and Fahrenheit 451, and analyzed the different ways these authors created their own totalitarian society.…
As centuries pass and time continues to lapse, more and more countries are handing in their older systems of government for new ones such as democracy. Some countries, however, continue with the dictatorship model, even though logically, this system is as fallacious as it gets. In Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar” and Orwell’s “Animal Farm”, there are plenty of superb examples of dictatorship leading to the downfall of entire communities. Brutus and Caesar from “Julius Caesar” and Napoleon from “Animal Farm” are three great examples of dictatorship causing problems.…
During the interwar period (1919-1939), many new authoritarian governments began to spring up and gain lots of popularity. For example, Hitler’s Nazi Germany, Mussolini’s fascist Italy and Stalin’s communist Russia. People became dissatisfied with their democratic governments because their countries had lost recent wars and because their country’s economies were falling apart. They felt as if their government had failed them so they turned to new totalitarian governments. All three of these governments helped their countries “bounce back” economically and militarily so people were more willing to have their individual freedom’s taken away for the good of the state. This motivated authoritarian governments to take control and “redeem” their countries for past embarrassments.…
The Kind if government authority seen both mimics and satirizes the way Americans came to see the enemy (the Soviet Union) during the Cold War, which was near its height of distrust and fear in the late 1950 's and early 1960 's.…
Oceania serves as an example of what's it would be to live where the basic freedoms we would hardly notice,do not exist. You would live in cold desolate world, unable to express any your inner thoughts, or have any meaningful interaction with anyone else. You would simply exist for the mere sake of existence, ultimately without any purpose except for what the party decides. 1984 serves as a warning as to what terrors a totalitarian form of government may…
Throughout the evolution of man, power and control have been idealized. When power is attained by manipulative dictators, citizens may initially view them as a means to satisfy their need for structure and direction. An author's grim prophecy of mankind in a totalitarian society is depicted in George Orwell's, 1984. Citizens in Oceania are governed by the Party Big Brother, which succeeds in controlling their actions and minds. The concept of oppression is taken to a new level, until there is no sense of humanity within the society.…

Every Government needs a framework in order for them to efficiently work, regulate, and rule the masses. This framework is known as a Constitution, and it is a set of fundamental principles created according to the desires and needs of those involved in its forging. Now Government power is limited when there is a mutual respect on the restraints on power, a constitution with legal limits on power, individual rights are protected in the constitution, and in all there is a status quo for promoting what is best for everyone. To add to this there is a separation of powers and the power must be shared. However, the polar opposite of a limited government is an unlimited government which includes two types, an Authoritarian and Totalitarian. Within a Totalitarian government, there is one dominant leader supported by a mass party, the media is controlled, there is no opposition allowed, terror is used to maintain power, and individual behavior is controlled. In an Authoritarian government, it is controlled by a single person or a dominant elite, the military shows full support, the government itself is not accountable for its actions, the media can be censored, and the public is not allowed to criticize the government.…
In dystopian narratives, the governments utilize excessive control as a method of enforcement. Overpowering is used by the government on its own citizens in order to conceal the facts and not acknowledge the true. The totalitarian authorities in the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949) by George Orwell and the film Brazil (1985) directed by Terry Gilliam, consistently enforce overpowering in order to accept dictatorial policies and to manipulate the citizens. The other sources, “Zim Govt Found Responsible for Torture in Landmark Ruling”(2013) similarly describes the use of government power in a unreasonable strict manner. An examination of these sources reveal how dystopian governments apply excessive control while abusing their own citizens.…
George Orwell’s classic novel ‘Nineteen Eighty Four’ paints a bleak picture of a futuristic society controlled by a totalitarian government. 1984 is a novel about using power to control society. George Orwell's novel was published in 1948 and this is significant because World War II had recently ended and the Nazi dictatorship of Adolph Hitler in Germany had been defeated. This was not an end to dictatorship around the world; however, because Joseph Stalin controlled Russia in much the same way that Hitler had controlled Germany and Mao Zedong was in charge of China. Propaganda, fear, murder and thought control were methods that Hitler, Stalin and Mao used to gain power and to control their countries. In 1984, many similarities exist between the novel and Hitler's Germany, Stalin's Russia and Mao's China. Big Brother could easily represent Hitler, Stalin and Mao. Overall, the main methods of control in 1984 were control of education and information and over bearing system of rules.…

According to the political scientist Carl Friedrich, a totalitarian regime is distinguished by the following characteristics: a powerful ideology, which promised the onset of a golden era; a single mass-based party, led by a charismatic dictator; a system of terror, built around a ruthless secret police force; and the centralised control of the economy, the mass media and the armed forces.…
