To stay in the loop with society and everyday events, most of us flip on the T.V. or radio. Not Immortal Technique, an activist and rapper. In his song “The 4th Branch “he states the media has corporate ties, which sets a fixed agenda and manipulated perspective. This is done with the use of a soft-melodic tune, bringing emotion upon his aggressive tone and message. With his emotional sound, Immortal Technique adds symbols, similes, and metaphors to create a connection with the listener. In the song you will hear unorthodox and sensitive methods of figurative language. “Flow like the blood of Abraham through the Jews and the Arabs, Broken apart like a woman's heart, abused in a marriage, the brink of holy war, bottled up, like a miscarriage” This line is layered with symbolism and similes. He cleverly uses biblical stories with emotional tragedy to describe the splitting of a nation with foreshadows of war. As a listener it’s hard not to feel emotion with this imagery. Throughout most of the song you hear eccentric figurative language, except in the chorus (also known as hook). “It's like MK-ULTRA, controlling your brain suggestive thinking, causing your perspective to change, they want to rearrange the whole point of view of the ghetto The fourth branch of the government, want us to settle---.” Here is where you hear the raw form of his message through literary language. MK-ULTRA was a research operation experiment through the CIA involving the behavioral engineering of humans. He brings up this experiment to show the capabilities of our nations technology and practices, to prove a controlled media is realistic. Also his side of early upbringings in class struggle comes into play. He mentions “they” (the media) want to change how people look at the ghetto. Considering he was brought up in poverty it is clear his beliefs of media creating a negative, worthless image of the ghetto, are strong. His aggressive tone is frustrated and forceful which creates passion towards the subject. This makes it poetic. Yes he rhymes and uses figurative language but he has compassion for the subject, along with methods of evoking emotion and suggestive interpretation with words. Instead of signing like traditional songs Immortal technique puts a preaching style methodology to his lyrics. When you hear the songs it’s almost as if he’s speaking to you and not ‘rapping’. He uses personal experiences, like being an activist, to persuade and reach the audience. ”A continent of oil kingdoms, bought for a bargain, Democracy is just a word, when the people are starving', the average citizen, made to be, blind to the reason, A desert full of genocide, where the bodies are freezing', and the world doesn't believe that you fighting' for freedom”. It is inevitably to feel the compassion with Immortal Techniques use of figurative language. If he doesn’t inspire you with his activist-like preaching than, the emotional beat itself will, along-side with the mountain full use of figurative language, interwoven with each other. Whether you believe the media is controlled by corporations or not, a couple things are clear. You will be caught off guard with the vulgar language and find yourself suddenly questioning your beliefs.
The 4th Branch lyrics
The new age is upon us
And yet the past refuses to rest in its shallow grave
For those who hide behind the false image of the son of man
shall stand before God!!! It has begun
The beginning of the end
Yeah... yeah, yeah
The voice of racism preaching the gospel is devilish
A fake church called the prophet Muhammad a terrorist
Forgetting God is not a religion, but a spiritual bond
And Jesus is the most quoted prophet in the Qu'ran
They bombed innocent people, tryin' to murder Saddam
When you gave him those chemical weapons to go to war with Iran This is the information that they hold back from Peter Jennings Cause Condoleeza Rice is just a new...
