An unexpected friend
In Langston Hughes, “Thank you, M'am, readers quickly met two characters: Roger and Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones. Readers learn that Mrs. Jones is a big, fearless women for fighting off Roger. Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones gives off a mean first impression to readers.. People may not see these traits at first glance, but as readers dig down deeper into the story, they see the true side of Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones. Even though she has traits readers can easily depict, she also has traits that require more attention to pick up on. She gives off this perception that she is this big, mean old lady but in reality she is a strong, generous, motherly figure, who just wants to teach Roger a lesson

When readers first meet Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, they quickly learn she is a very strong person not only mentally but physically. People first see her brute strength when she picked Roger up by the shirt and “shook him until his teeth rattled.” She also kicks Roger right where the sun does not shine. This is where we see her mental strength as well. When most people get mugged, they usually comply and let the thief have their stuff. This is not the case with Mrs. Jones, she does not hesitate to turn around and fight off Roger. Her courage to actually fight off her mugger shows just how mentally tough Mrs. Jones is. She did not end up just fighting him off but took him home to teach him a valuable life lesson.

When Mrs. Jones takes Roger home with her she starts to display a motherly attitude toward Roger. She starts to this attitude after Roger tells her that he has no one at home. After that she acts like a true mother. She tells him to go wash his face and clean up before dinner. She instills hard work into Roger like most mothers do. She continuously tells Roger that working for things he needs, will come easier than if he were to try to steal. Clearly Roger found that out the hard way but despite what happened,...
