The Hobbit In The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien there is this Hobbit names Bilbo Baggins whose life has changed forever when he stumbles upon a wizard named Gandalf and a bunch of dwarves. In this book Bilbo has a set way of doing things eats breakfast twice a day and has a routine. One adventure changed his life forever when he got offered to be a burglar for the dwarves at the lonely mountain. He had to endure a treacherous journey that was way out of his comfort zone but at the same time was the thrill of his life. He encounters Goblins and Wogs an all sorts of crazy creatures he had never heard or seen before. Individuals have power of what they become and their life and Bilbo is a great example of it. There are many factors that can be put into play to identify a character in the hobbit whether it is a name or a species of some sort. “You have nice manners for a thief and a liar," said the dragon. In the book something that makes the hobbit him is having good manners it makes him unique. So part of a character's identity must be their species. In most books it’s not an issue, but in The Hobbit it matters whether we are talking about a dwarf, hobbit, elf, or a dragon. Another important factor is the names given to the creatures such as Bilbo or Gandalf or even Thorin. Amos 2
Tolkien was a linguist and names were very important to him, even in The Hobbit where he is writing for children.
Individuals do have power over which they become in situations such as Bilbo Baggins because he chose to go on the adventure that Gandalf had invited him on he could have stayed home where he was comfortable. “Where there's life there's hope.” So whenever they want to change something in their life they have hope to change it, no matter what. When Bilbo decided to go on the journey he was looking for adventure and was bored with how things were going at home because he did the same thing every day. If he hadn’t gone his life would still be the same way it was before he went on his trip to the lonely mountain with Gandalf and the dwarves. Anyone has power over who they become they just have to choose the right adventures. In The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien there is this Hobbit names Bilbo Baggins whose life has changed forever when he stumbles upon a wizard named Gandalf and a bunch of dwarves. Everyone has the chance to change the way they want to live their life they just have to take a step in the right direction to get there. Individuals have power of what they become and their life and Bilbo is a great example of it.

The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien is said to be one of the greatest children's novels of all time. The novel, due to its use of such characters as goblins, elves, trolls, giants, and others is in tradition, a fairy tale. The tale centers on a small hobbit by the name of Bilbo Baggins. Homo floresiensis (“Man of Flores”) is the name for a possible new species in the genus Homo, remarkable for its small body, small brain, and survival until relatively recent times (www.en.wikipedia.org). “You are not the hobbit you once were “, shapes the transformation of the protagonist Bilbo Baggins. In the novel The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien, Bilbo Baggins character grows throughout the novel “The Hobbit”. In the beginning he is a shy, peaceful and self-absorbed hobbit who stayed nowhere but his hobbit hole, that also loves routine, then he has an unexpected surprise visit by a wizard named Gandalf who offers Bilbo a chance to go on an adventure. Bilbo has now become a distinct and enriched version of himself. Even though Bilbo did heroic actions they did not extensively change who Bilbo was in the beginning of the book. Bilbo now still has some of his tookish qualities but he is no longer arrogant nor cauchy. Bilbo never really acknowledged his special qualities until he found the ring. When these qualities came into play he stayed humbled. He never bragged about how special he has become. “If you have a pipe about you sit down and have a fill of mine! There's no hurry, we have all the day before of us!” Restating this quote from chapter 1 on page 4 explains the kind of life Bilbo lived before he contributed with experiences with the ring. “My dear Bard!” Squeaked Bilbo. “Don't be so hasty! I never met such suspicious folk! I am merely trying to avoid trouble for all concerned.” This quote from chapter 6 on page 273 shows how Bilbo has elaborated from the beginning of the book because Bilbo is now no longer looking for trouble. In the fantasy novel The Hobbit, by J.R. Tolkien there are a lot of obstacles the character Bilbo Baggins has to confront. Throughout the book Bilbo seems to take on different challenges, which allow him to mature faster in a way that the Shire would not allow. In the Shire, Bilbo was just a normal hobbit who minded his own business and was never late for dinner. But after Gandalf and the dwarves came knocking on his door, his whole life seemed to change in an instant and it kept changing in a way that Bilbo had no control over. The farther that Bilbo moved through this journey the more he opened up to the world. At the shire Bilbo could have been considered a child in some ways because, he knew of no evil that existed outside of his world other than stories he had heard. There are many prime examples of how Bilbo was turned from a simpleton into a hero. The whole book seems to be a simple metamorphosis of how someone can change just by going through an adventure with new people and trying new things. From moving on to a new life to having to look death directly in the face, the maturation of Mr. Baggins is definitely pointed out here clearly and should not be overlooked by the reader.…

1. Thesis Statement: Within the pages of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien there is courage, adventure, and a great change of character in Mr. Bilbo Baggins. The Hobbit starts off with the description of what sort of creatures’ hobbits are and the introduction of Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo is just like any other regular hobbit; he enjoys food, doesn’t like adventure, and right at the beginning says, “We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner. I don’t see what anyone sees in them (page 6).” This he says to Gandalf the Grey who’s a wizard and returns to Hobbiton after many years on a search for someone who is willing to go on an adventure. Right off the bat Bilbo tells Gandalf absolutely not, he is not looking for an adventure, but Gandalf must of mistook his answer for consent to going on an adventure because before Bilbo knows it he’s off with a group of 13 dwarves on a quest to regain the dwarf Thorin’s homeland from the evil dragon Smaug. I think the moment when Bilbo really begins his change of character is when they were all meeting before they went off on their quest and the dwarves thought he couldn’t hear them, and they started talking about how Bilbo seemed much to small, timid, and weak to be any good at burglaring. When they said those things Bilbo’s Took side of the family won out and he began to find himself thinking, “…He would go without bed and breakfast to be thought fierce. As for little fellow bobbing on the mat it also made him really fierce (page 18)…” This part in the story is when I believe Bilbo began to have sparks of thoughts that maybe he really did want to go on an adventure.…

The Hobbit shares many of it's themes and several of its key qualities in characters with those established in previous stories or myths, starting with Bilbo Baggins. The aristocratic line present in the halfling’s family tree earns him the comfort and joy of the largest home with the most luxury in Bag End. The world of The Hobbit is very similar to ours. It allows us to compare their world with ours. We can relate to many of the concepts Tolkien writes about, though the fictional characters are what intrigue its readers. Gandalf is a more humble, subtle type of wizard, yet still potent, strong, and bold. Dwarves have always played a rather small part in stories. In The Hobbit, Tolkien gives more depth to their characters by making them well known in their world to be excellent miners and blacksmiths.
