Last years statistics show that 3,331 people were killed and 387,000 were injured due to texting and driving. Using cell phones while driving is not necessary and it can wait; too many innocent drivers and pedestrians are injured everyday due to texting and driving. The Teen Driver cell phone statistics shows that “ 60% of America admits to risky texting and driving (NDS)”. It really is not worth it when it comes to using a cell phone while driving. Banning the use of a cell phone while driving should be something we need to take serious while driving and should be illegal. Texting causes crashes, injury, and possible death.
Initially, texting and driving should be illegal is because it distracts the driver from the road. Another reason why is because it endangers the drivers around the person who is texting. The third reason why is because teens and young adults lack driving experience and combined with distractions can lead to crashes and death. “most of society thinks it is teens that cause all this madness”(TDS); 54% of teens say they have seen their parents on the phone texting or talking on the phone while driving. Banning the use of cell phones while driving should be enforced as a law because we lose too many people a year to something so foolish. The national driving statistics show that “texting while driving makes a driver twenty three times more likely to crash”(TDS). What is the point of putting your self at risk of twenty three times more likely to crash when texting and driving.
In addition, 94% of teens pledged to the “no texting and driving campaign” yet we are still having thousands of wrecks a day due to this issue. When texting and driving most teens think they would never crash when driving because they are too cautious of what is going on around them, but that is the complete opposite. Teenagers and young adults may think that they are grown up and can handle adult responsibilities but the fact of the matter is no one should be texting and driving period. It is not an adult privilege; it is a habit that many people need to break. Another study shows that texting and even just talking on your cell phone can make your reaction time as slow as 70 year olds.
Texting while driving has proved to be more dangerous than driving drunk. Drivers pose the same risk of injuring your self and others. If you wouldn’t drive drunk, then drivers should not drive and text. When texting, drivers are not concentrating on driving, sending or receiving a text requires you to fixate your eyes on the phone. This in turn causes you to take your eyes off the road. An accident can occur in the blink of an eye. The one to two second it takes to glance at your phone, is the same amount of time it takes to wreck, strike a pedestrian, and/or run off the road.
Ultimately some individuals still believe that texting and driving does not affect their motor skills they would be better off just waiting until they are at a complete stop to use it. Banning the use of cellphone while operating a motor vehicle should be in effect now and something everyone should reconsider while operating a vehicle.

Every day we witness multiple tragic accidents involving people texting and driving. In my paper I will be arguing that the state of Minnesota should act boldly to create tougher laws on texting and driving offenders, and also create laws to ban people from using hands-free cell phones in their vehicle unless needed for an emergency. Also it is to be determined the meaning of texting and driving, the people involved, the laws needed to enforce it, which is affected when someone is injured or killed; and what is being done about it.…

One reason why texting while driving shouldn’t be banned is because it would be pointless. Drivers don’t only get distracted only by texting, but by many other things. As Balko stated in his article “There are countless other driver distractions that we’d never think of banning, from having kids in the back seat, to eating or drinking while driving to fumbling with the radio.” (Balko) The little things that people do while operating a vehicle can be more distracting than what people can imagine. Anything can happen on the roads when driving and at any time. Drivers would have to be more cautious when driving.…

Texting while driving is not a good habit, with just moving our eyes from the road to answer a simple message can cause someone life. According to Ian Mulgrew, a journalist author from Canada, many accidents are blamed on distracted driving and most of the distractions are caused by cell phone usage. There are many laws being established to try to prevent distracted driving from happening; although they can’t completely stop it. No matter what age of the driver is, under no circumstance should they be texting while driving. Texting or using a cell phone while driving is very hazardous to yourself and the people surrounding you. However, the lives of innocent people are being taken every day due to a simple distraction. According to Mulgrew, car crashes are four times more common to take place while the driver is on their mobile device over any other causes. According to Bret Schulte, talking on a cell phone is not as dangerous as texting these days.in addition, while talking on the phone, it is easier to still keep focused on the road in front of the driver. But when they engage in a text message, it’s not possible to look in both directions at once, therefore all of their focus goes straight to the screen of the cell phone. It’s hard for all drivers, especially teenagers, to put down the cell phone and put their hands on the wheel, which results in many car crashes.…

Driving is a privilege, and in many cases this privilege is abused. Some people don’t take driving seriously and this often results in terrible accidents. Other innocent people sadly become victims of this carelessness. The U.S banned several acts that result in accidents such as drinking under the influence. Driving while under the influence was banned because it affects the drivers’ concentration. Doesn’t texting while driving do the same thing? When a driver is texting his/her focus is not on the road and at any moment the driver may lose control of their vehicle. Texting while driving should be banned in every state because it’s a dangerous act; this ban will decrease the amount of accidents caused by this act, and it will provide safety for fellow drivers.…

Five years ago on a bright June day, then-20- year-old Amanda Kloehr went about her usual cell phone routine: "Updating my Facebook status, reading other people's updates, and texting," she says. But she wasn't at home or even in class—she was behind the wheel of her car, cruising down U.S. Route 13 at a highway speed. Amanda couldn't have known that moments later her distracted driving would cause her to slam into the tractor-trailer in front of her with enough force to push the entire vehicle forward six feet. "I shouldn't have lived," she says now, still shaken. "I could have been decapitated."Instead, Amanda lost her right eye. It took 36 plates and 48 screws to rebuild her face. And more than 20 surgeries later, the road to recovery still stretches out before her. "I'm in pain everywhere all the time," she says, "but I know I'm lucky to be alive." This story comes from www.teenvogue.com. Is it really worth? Texting while driving is quickly becoming one of the countries most top killers . Many teens don't realize that texting and driving is dangerous, but it is. How big is this problem? “In 2011, 23% of the car accidents were caused from texting and driving. That is 1.3 million crashes.” according to www.textinganddrvingsaftey.com. Many believe that its becoming more of a habit for adults than for teens. Adults maybe the cause of why some teens do it. Kids watch their parents and the they think its safe cause if their parents can do it then it must be. They should be role models. The thing is they all know its wrong but it doesn't seem to stop them.…

I do support in the fact that texting a driving should be considered illegal, mainly for the soul purpose that many people die because of the distractions on the road that your phone can cause. “In the past three years alone, 30 states have banned texting while driving, the only state that has not done it yet is Oklahoma.” (Delcour 2) You see on the news that there are many teenagers now a days that get into car accident why? BECAUSE THEY WERE TEXTING AND DRIVING! “Last year, despite assurance by S.C. lawmakers that a texting ban would be passed, obviously it died without coming up for a final vote.”(EDITORIAL 6) I know people who try to text and drive but we always remind them that there are other people in this care ad unless they want the guilt of their friends death due to their carelessness then that’s up to them. When I get behind the wheel of a car I turn my phone to silent and I don’t turn it back up until I that car is stopped and I get out of that car, I don’t sit there at a red light or a stop sign reading text messages or taking calls while I’m behind the wheel of a moving vehicle. It is unsafe to not only you but the people in your car, and the people outside of your car as well like other drivers, pedestrians, animals, etc. I think that if it were to become illegal then it should not only have one ticket for texting while driving but also another one for being stupid to put yourself and other in a dangerous risk of dying or getting seriously hurt. “Fifty-eight percent of those under 45 say texting while driving should be punished less severely than driving while intoxicated, while 65 percent of those over 45 say the severity of the punishment should be equal for both.” (CBS 6) I am still kind of a new driver myself but I do know how to stay safe on the road from anything that may distract me and end up causing a lot of damage.…

A reason why texting and driving is a serious issue is because it causes a disproportionate amount of accidents every year. In 2012, 3,328 people were killed and 421,000 were injured in distraction-affected crashes (NHTSA). It’s a shocking realization that so many lives are taken every year over something that could have been simply avoided, yet the number of accidents still continue to rise. The popularity of texting has caused an unforeseen danger- texting while driving. It has been proven scientifically that texting while driving reduces your awareness by almost half, and that texting while driving is over four times more dangerous than driving under the influence of alcohol. These are very disturbing results for anyone on the road, especially since it has been proven that an estimated 65% of drivers are texting and driving every single day. There are some opponents of the new laws that punish drivers that text. Their primary argument is that texting while driving is the least of the dangers we have on the road compared to driving with under the influence of alcohol. We should continue to support the decisions that were made to ban the use of texting while driving. Such behavior has huge unintended consequences- serious injury or death of drivers and passengers but it also can lead to distractions while driving.…

The number of people who have been affected by texting and driving is dramatically increasing. Clearly the laws, punishments, and education up to this point have not done much to change how people view texting and driving. Due to the facts that have been revealed about texting and driving, it is imperative that the government takes strong action to fight this rising epidemic. Although it may be near impossible to keep people off their phones, it is vital that stricter laws are put against it. Law enforcement, including police and the judicial system must put their foot down and stand by it. All ages must be targeted as well. Even though older people may think they are more experienced behind the wheel, accidents can happen and they should not be able to use their phones either. It should also no longer be a question whether it is a safe time to pick up the phone and send a quick text. The punishments must be toughened, forcing people to face harder consequences if caught texting while driving behind the wheel. License suspension would be a strong preventive in order for people to keep both hands on the wheel. On top of the new laws that should be put against texting while driving, drawing attention and focus to people who have suffered tragedies from texting and driving could be a key part to prevent more from happening. Making sure people are fully educated, enforcing stronger laws, and following through with stricter punishments are the first things that need to be done in order to keep people off their phones. Do you want the last thing you see before flying off the road to be “What r u doing? LOL”? There is nothing so important in a text message that cannot wait until later.
