Fabric Testing
Tensile Strength
To determine how something will react when it is pulled apart- when force is applied to it in tension.
Control sample Test sample
Testing at home:
I took two of my dads’ pliers and placed the either side of the test sample between the two heads. I then exerted human force using my strength and pulled the sample in opposite direction, while doing this I timed the action.
Results:
The fabric tore and the force it took was 3m/s
In the lab:
• Apparatus:
Computerized tensile testing machine
Tensile testing machine
• Testing method:
The specimen is place at either ends of the heads on the tensile testing machine. The machine is then switched on and the heads are pulled in opposite direction and the force is then calculated. This machine can be used to conduct the following;
1. Tensile tests
2. Tearing tests
3. Creep tests
4. Compression tests
Crease Recovery
The ability of creased or wrinkled fabric to recover to its original shape and size overtime.
Control sample Test sample
Testing at home:
I took both sample and drew a 5cm x5cm squares. I then folded the test sample and place it under and stack of books for a few hours, I then removed it for another few and let it relax. I then measured the angle before and after.
Results:
The angle changed from 70degrees to 100degrees
In the lab:
• Apparatus:
Crease recovery tester
• Testing method:
A crease is formed by applying pressure onto a folded specimen within the loading device. Tissue can be placed inside folded specimento avoid sticking. On removal, the specimen is allowed to relax, the angles are then measured to calculate the angle
Shrinkage
The contraction of yarns or fabric after washing or dyeing
Control sample Test sample
Testing at home:
I drew 5cm x 5cm squares on both sample fabric. I took one of the samples and with warm water let it go through a full wash cycle, tumble dry.... [continues]
