2.1 introduction (ABOUT project)
The Kathmandu Valley, where the metropolitan city along with one sub-metropolitan city, three municipalities and several VDCs are situated with concentration of physical infrastructure and socio-economic opportunities there, has been a national economic and employment boom centre. It is the largest resource consumer and has a complex pattern of settlement with high population density. Since, the turn of 80's the urban and industrial growth in the valley has intensified and the trend is continuing and expected to remain so for the years to come. This led to rapid inflow of migration to the Valley and it is estimated to be more in the days to come. Rapid increase of population in the valley has led to increase of urban activities and generating more wastes in the above mentioned municipalities and other VDCs (Village Development committees) of the Valley. This has created several problems in the urban environment, and municipalities have been facing challenges to manage the problem.
Earlier the wastes generated in the Kathmandu valley were disposed off in and around the neighboring flood plains of rivers and farm lands in the traditional manner. KMC together with SMMRMC initiated planned waste dumping in Gokarna in 1986. Since it was wastes dumping only, the method of wastes disposal was hazardous to the local communities. Time and again there was disturbance and objections from the local people. Wastes were dumped at the river banks of Bagamati River and Bishnumati River whenever Gokarna Landfill Site was closed.
