Tesco PLC is a global grocery and general merchandise retailer. Tesco originally specialised in food and drink and even to this date it dominates both the online and offline grocery market. However, in recent decades Tesco have diversified and started operating in numerous unrelated segments such as clothing, electronics, home, healthcare, car insurance, music downloads CDs, DVDs, financial services and many more. Tesco’s major competitors are Asda, Sainsburys and Safeway. The threat of new entrants into the market is relatively low. Tesco also enjoys the power it has over its suppliers. However, as Tesco operates globally, there are several factors that hinder the daily operations of the giant supermarket chain. Due to its international presence in 14 countries, Tesco’s performance is highly influenced by the legislative and political situations of these countries as well as the economic, social, technological and environmental factors. For instance, Tesco currently has to comply with the rules and regulations that are imposed upon them by the Food Retailing Commission and must take into account employment legislation the government have proposed. They are currently engaged in practices such as minimising waste which demonstrate their awareness of corporate social responsibility. The implementation of the self-service checkouts throughout its stores is proof that they are up to date with technological advances within the industry. My justification for choosing Tesco PLC for my analysis is because I am a regular customer to the company and I believe this is a great opportunity to understand some of the strategies and factors behind the success of the organisation. The strategic challenge that the firm is currently facing is that the company has generated some negative attention in the media recently which may result in a loss of sales.
