TELEVISION
Are people nowadays addicted to TV? How does TV influence people’s behavior (particularly young people’s? Is violence on television a problem? What kinds of programmes do you enjoy? Do you think there should be more control of television programmes?
I think there are many programmes that could offend certain members of the public, for this reason certain measures should be taken. The government should have the means to control TV programmes but, without being a kind of censorship.

There could be, for instance, a team of experts appointed by the government who would be in charge of ensuring that the different TV channels come to an agreement on certain principles concerning the quality of programmes, publicity, and ethical questions.
State TV should not be used for government propaganda, but should offer quality shows to the audience. This implies being impartial with the news they broadcast, offering cultural programmes at reasonable times of the day shortening the time given to publicity.

For the other hand television is especially influential on the children today. The hard truth is that children spend on average of 28 hours a week in front of the television and the images that kids see sometimes has profound impact on their behavior: we can see it in the way they attempt to emulate their favorite rock stars by dressing in a similar style and the way children play games, imitating their favorite cartoon personalities or super heroes. Studies have shown that extensive television viewing may be associated with, aggressive behavior, poor academic performance, precocious sexuality, obesity, and the use of drugs or alcohol.

In my opinion, nowadays television has bad quality, there are a lot of reality program, gossips programs, bad old films, a lot of sexism and racist advertising… I think that the television should be more educational, because is a way of getting a message across to a vast number of people, and for this reason is a perfect means of making real progress in the way we behave.

In the UK, the tone of the debate about public service broadcasting was set in the earlier radio era. John Reith, the first Director General of the BBC, wrote,3 “the preservation of a high moral tone is obviously of paramount importance.” And “[t]here is no harm in trivial things; in themselves they may even be unquestionably beneficial, for they may assist the more serious work by providing the measure of salt which seasons.” Coase (1950, page 177) remarked that…
