GSM – Global System for Mobile Communications, the most widespread digital cell-phone technology that uses narrow-band TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access). GSM provides digital voice and data services at a speed less than 9.6 kbps. GSM was the dominant 2G mobile phone standard for most of the world and the most visible feature of GSM are SIM cards that are removable, thumb-sized smart cards that identify users on the network.

CDMA – CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) is a digital wireless communication technology. It is a spread spectrum technology that has no hard limit for the number of users who may share one base station (tower). Instead with CDMA, additional users can connect until the base station determines the call quality would suffer beyond a set limit. This technology is in commercial use since 1995. CDMA networks operate in the 800 and 1900 MHz frequency bands with primary markets in the America and the Asia.

ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) – A metric used by investors and analysts as the profitability indicator of a wireless carrier company. ARPU is the average amount of revenue a company generates from each user per month. Players often try to improve this number by selling extra services to users such as data plans, messaging and downloadable content.

AMPU (Average Margin Per User) – AMPU is the difference between the revenue a user generates and the cost of servicing that user. The greater the AMPU, the greater the profits.

In telecommunication context, CHURN refers to the tendency of internet and mobile phone subscribers to switch providers. In simpler words, CHURN describes customer turnover and especially attrition or loss during a particular time due to dissatisfaction with an existing provider. There are various kinds of churn, such as voluntary, involuntary and internal. Churn is measured or calculated by dividing disconnects by the net subscriber base. However, it differs depending upon the time period it is being calculated (beginning, end or average between the two).

CHRUN rate or the rate of attrition is an important business metric for all the telecommunication carriers across the globe.

Figures as of October 2012

1. China Mobile (China): 11% year-on-year to 683.1 million subscribers with revenue of US$ 22.05 billion. 2. Vodafone Group (United Kingdom): 5% year-on-year to 386.88 million subscribers with revenue of US$13.92 billion. 3. America Movil Group (United States): 7% year-on-year to 251.83 million subscribers with revenue of USD 7.98 billion. 4. The progress and the changes in telecom have been astronomical with new and cheaper technologies evolving almost every year, which in turn helps in creating immense employment opportunities. It is also considered as one of the key economic indicators of an economy. The introduction of all advanced technologies makes this industry highly lucrative and competitive with the emergence of several players across key service segments of the industry. Telecommunications industry in any economy, by far helps in with speedy growth in investments eventually leads to intense competition while providing worthwhile services at reasonable prices. All this in turn grows and further fosters the appetite of any economy.

For me, this industry is more an investment intensive industry that always revolves around the use of latest technology in its core infrastructure, due to which several new services come into being at a faster rate and at a reasonable cost, Per my understanding, the key industry growth indicators tend to change at a much faster rate than any other industry of such size such as retail or oil and gas.

The very fact that Indian telecommunication industry is still in a nascent stage, provides much wider opportunity for everyone to equally participate in the overall development of the industry by adding several value-added services that in turn helps in adding up the subscriber’s base at a much faster rate than expected.

This industry provides me with the flexibility to get to know something new every day, identifying more realistic solutions to some of the most complex problems thereby stimulating my intellectual development and expertise. Making me more focus so that I can contribute much more in the overall operational and client development.
