Teenagers and Society
Who decide the culture of people? It is society. Indeed, it determines the norms that citizens must follow in order to fit in. Therefore, the ‘‘culture into which [people live] influences [their] sense of who [they] are and what [their] goals in life should be’’ (Robertson 48). This is good because people who rule the society can impose good values and be a good influence on citizens. However, it can also be negative for some groups of people. In fact, the culture of the North American society has a bad influence on teenagers.
Primarily, in North America, people live in a world where mass media occupies a huge space in people’s lives due to the technology advancements that have come to be. Unfortunately, mass media influences teenagers greatly, but does so in a bad way through advertising, film, social networks, video games and so on. Moreover, an example of this is that women are sexualized and portrayed as objects through marketing and advertising: ‘‘from a young age, girls are treated as sexual objects, their development is not respected, and the lines between childhood and adulthood are blurred’’ (Our Children Under Influence). Furthermore, most of the films people watch in North America are based or filmed in Hollywood where the amount of creativity is not limited, thus these films often contain violent or sexual scenes and are regarded as ‘‘normal’’ by viewers. Consequently, teenagers who watch these films tend to be influenced by them; for example a male who watches a film in which women are not portrayed as individuals, but as sexual objects that can be toyed with is more likely to have a changed perception of women. This could also lead to a loss of respect for them. On the other hand, a male who does not enjoy watching these types of movies is less likely to exert rude or grotesque behavior in accordance to women. Withal, ‘‘media violence leads to increased

It competes with families, friends, schools and communities in its ability to shape young teens' interests, attitudes and values. The mass media infiltrates their lives. Most young adolescents watch TV and movies, surf the Internet, exchange e-mails, listen to CDs and to radio stations that target them with music and commercials and read articles and ads in teen magazines. “ The youth are constantly bombarded with the media's messages and they don’t know how to take it in. “The problem is that young adolescents often don't--or can't--distinguish between what's good in the media and what's bad. Some spend hours in front of the TV or plugged into earphones, passively taking in what they see and hear--violence, sex, profanities, gender, stereotyping and storylines and characters that are unrealistic. We know from research such as that conducted by George Comstock and Erica Sherrar that seeing too much TV violence appears to increase aggressive behavior in children and that regular viewing of violence makes violence less shocking and more…

The effects of the media’s portrayal on sexuality on adolescent’s lives are vast. Most media in today’s society portrays acts of sexuality as commonplace and expected. It shows young girls being flirtatious and having sex. It shows young men as sexual predators or pressuring the girls. It is far and few between that a show displays age appropriate sexuality for it’s viewers. The media also represent’s young gays and lesbians more readily than it would have years ago. I think this is a good idea since that demographic of viewer base has increased greatly. This increased awareness for young people has both positive and negative impacts. The increased awareness of the effects of sexuality in early ages such as pregnancy and STD’s are more prevalent than in yester years. However, the increased stimuli of sexuality leads to more exploration of our younger generations to have sex earlier than they should be and producing babies at a younger age as well as they are contracting more STD’s. I think the media’s influence on our future generations needs to be tempered and that is the job of the parent or caregiver. The media’s portrayal of sexuality has not has as great an effect on my life as it could have as I do not watch much TV and tend to read more often than watch a movie. The media has more of an impact on those around me and influences me through them. My friends have an intense amount of pornography that they watch and it makes them see women as objects instead of as human beings. They want to go to Hooters instead of a nice restaurant. This is because the advertising for Hooters portrays the women working as waitresses there as sexual objects much like their pornography does. My nieces and nephews play video games with…

For instance, as examined in the article by “Pediatrics”, “music lyrics and TV content don’t discuss the dangers of sexual activity and consequences such as unplanned pregnancy or STDs.”(Morin 1-2). The message from the media is unreliable for adolescents because it only indulges in sex not expressing the dangers. Kids see these behaviors as normal and acceptable when few people actually live this way. As Well, as expressed in the article published by “Livestrong”, the author explained, “that men are often portrayed as sex driven, and women and sex objects,”(Morin 1-2). Teaching kids that males are dominant and females are toy to be thrown around diminishes values and defeats the point of gender equality. Young boys grow up believing all women behave like the women in music videos. Their unrealistic views on relationships could prove disastrous or even dangerous. Sexual music lyrics or Tv shows diminish a sense of gender equality and encourages sexual behaviors leading to serious…

The abundance of sexual material in the media is influencing teenagers to make unhealthy choices about sex. Because sexual themes can be found in all forms of media, it is difficult for teenagers not to be subjected to it. Richard Jackson and Christopher Barlett state, “[aAdolescents] . . . learn about sex from . . . media outlets such as movies, television, magazines, song lyrics, videos and the internet” (1). Allyssa Harris adds, “[tThe] media are among the primary educators for adolescents about sexuality and sexual behavior” (235). When teenagers are exposed to sexual themes in popular media, it alters their way of thinking in regards to sex. David Myers declares, “[tT]he more sexual content adolescents view, the more likely they are to perceive their peers as sexually active, to develop sexually permissive attitudes, and to experience early intercourse” (361). Frequent exposure to sexual media will affect how teenagers develop their self-identity (Harris 236). When teenagers turn on a media format to be entertained, they are being exposed to sexually charged content that will have harmful consequences on their views on sex.…
