In the early 1900’s,”Unwed pregnant girls were sent away to live for a year or more in maternity homes founded by evangelical Protestant women. They key principle of these homes were that “only by becoming a mother to her child would the unwed mothers overcome the degradations of seduction, abandonment, and out-of-wedlock pregnancy and achieve redemption.””(ProQuest Staff 1). There are multiple views on the topic of teenage pregnancy, some good others not so much. My goal is to determine whether teenage pregnancy is really as bad as everyone believes, or if it is just a new trend that they will just have to get used to.
“The Real Mistake in ‘Teen Pregnancy’ is an inspiring article that points out multiple sides of teen pregnancy that many people choose to ignore. One of the major things that occurred lately was the pact between high school girls in Massachusetts. After subsequent investigations the allegations on the girls was later disproven. Yet, the “National Campaign to Prevent Teenage Pregnancy,” still turned the allegations around about how there are so many things causing teenage pregnancy, including pop culture, lack of morals, and a lack of sex education. The article also discussed the study of Joseph Hotz. He did a study showing that teen moms in the long run end up earning more money, and are less likely to be poor than some women who wait till they were in their 20’s. I found this to make perfect sense. Teen mothers are able to pursue a better job by the time they are in their late 20’s early 30’s, while women who wait are sitting at home watching their young children. All of this information combined shows that teenage pregnancy is not as dire as everyone believes.
Janine Jackson shows her support of Mike Males, and their alike thinking when it comes to the topic of teenage pregnancy. Jackson discusses many of the same issues as Males, but she also adds in what happened 50 years ago. The girls would be forced into a shot gun marriage, and... [continues]
