Teen Pregnancy

“Each year in the U.S. almost one million teenagers become pregnant--at enormous costs to themselves, their children, and society”. (Pregnant Teen Help, Teen Pregnancy Statistics) Teen pregnancy is too glorified in the United States. It is now being glamorized with shows such as “16 and Pregnant”, “Teen Mom”, “Secret Life of the American Teenager”, and “Juno”. These shows are among some of the top rated and most often watched on television. All which focus on how beautiful the pregnancy is. What they often do not show is the struggles by the soon-to-be mother and her family. Do not get me wrong, pregnancy is a beautiful thing. The thought of bringing a new life into the world is magnificent. However, a person needs to be in a monogamous relationship and financially stable before they take on the responsibility of another human being. As a teenager, that isn’t something that is thought about before engaging in sexual activity. It is all about the “here and now” not what could happen as a result of poor choices. If more young ladies knew just how much time, money and help from other people it took to raise a child at a young age, they might think before engaging in such risky behavior. Teenage pregnancy not only makes the young woman’s life a little bit harder; it changes it forever. Many times the teen will have to drop out of school and quit sports or club activities. She will also have to deal with being shunned by “friends”, family, and more often than not people she attended church with. One would think that those would be the people that would be there through it all. Often losing a social life can lead to depression, which is very unhealthy for mother, child, and everyone around them.
