Teenage Drinking has Become a Problem in Our Society
Teenage drinking has negatively impacted our current and future society in many ways including teenage drinking and driving, school performances, and increasing crimes.
I. A teenage driver and alcohol is a dangerous combination, which can lead to fatality.
A. Teenage drivers are at a greater risk of death in an alcohol-related vehicle accident than any other population because of inexperience, invincible thinking, and impaired judgment caused by alcohol.
1. Inexperience plays a major role not only in driving but also in the consumption of alcohol among youth drivers.
a. According to the studies done by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, young people are less likely to drive after drinking, but when they do they are more likely to end up crashing, due to the fact that they are drunk and relatively inexperienced in driving.
b. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Twenty-eight percent of 15- to 20-year-old drivers who were killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2005 had been drinking.
2. Teenage drivers tend to think that the statics does not apply in their case and is invincible to the effects of drinking and driving.
a. With the newly found independence of driving at the age of 16, many teenage drivers ignore the dangers involved with driving under the influence of alcohol.
b. Intoxicated teens are more likely to engage in risky behaviors, like speeding, using cell phones while driving, and not using seat belts. 3. Consuming alcohol impairs good and right judgment.
a. Driving requires paying attention to the road signs and safely operating the vehicle, which alcohol puts the safety factor in jeopardy.
b. Alcohol diminishes the thoughts of consequences that teens may face with drinking and driving.
