Teddy Roosevelt

Theodore Roosevelt Theodore Roosevelt, the twenty sixth president of the United States of America, was born on the twenty-seventh of October in 1858 into a wealthy family. Even thought he was sick during most of his childhood, he put aside his weaknesses and physically built his body. Being active just became a daily part of his life from then on, including his school days. While he attended Harvard, he was competitively involved in boxing and rowing (Mckay). Afterwards he had married Alice Hathaway Lee on his twenty-second birthday. To his devastation, his wife died on February 14, 1884 due to childbirth complications. Hours later, his mother had also died because of typhoid fever (Alice Hathaway Lee). This had seriously affected him. After the death of his wife, he had quit politics for a time and went to go live on a ranch. In 1886 he became married once again to Edith Kermit Carow (Theodore Roosevelt Biography). He returned to his old life in politics in 1889 when he was a member of the civil service commission. He led the reform effort to replace patronage with merit in the awarding of government jobs. He was later appointed to Assistant Secretary of the Navy when the war with Spain was about to erupt. When the war with Spain had started, Roosevelt quit his government position and rounded up the Rough Riders (THE WEST FILM PROJECT ). The Rough Riders were the first voluntary cavalry in the Spanish-American War (Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders). They consisted of Native Americans, miners, cowboys, and a few other groups of people. They participated in a few decisive battles in the war, but their most famous stand was at the battle of San Juan Hill. When the war was over, he became known as a war hero and was elected as the governor of New York. Because of his reforms, the Republican Party wanted to make him the next vice president so that he couldn’t interfere with anything.
