For every pro, there is an equal con, an idea mentioned to as the Faustian Bargain. But, the real trick is figuring whether the pro is worth the con and the use of technology in education is no exception. In the end, technology can be very useful without corruptions if the following four ideas are thought before realizing any technology in a learning atmosphere: access, assessment, collaboration, and expression implementation.
The Internet is plentiful. It is global and today’s society depends on it. Businesses use it when looking for job applicants, people for information access, and others for reaching out to old friends, so why not as a resource in schools? A Educational Developmental Company, has discovered access to the Internet has begun to increase learning. Their success is attributed to open access to online databases for historic and scientific material (Honey). Information access is equally important because digital records provided by well-known institutions such as museums, universities, and libraries allow distant access to information and resources previously impossible to smaller areas. These digital records are described by Honey as “unparalleled collections and connections [once only available] to our nation’s greatest universities” (Honey). “I think using the different information websites available is important due to the fact it helps the different types of people feel comfortable and have a better chance of learning.
But, information access is not a cure- all to education problems. It is necessary for teachers to assess whether it leads to increases in their students’ participation and recalling of material. Reading software can help with higher reading ability rates, as statewide application of such software has led to an increase in student performance and standardized test scores (Honey).
