Assesses both views and explain which author you find more convincing based on your observations of the Singaporean society. Paglia sees technology as undermining the written word while Eby feels that modern technology is providing a bridge between the literal and the visual. I find the argument of Paglia to be more convincing due to several reasons like diminishing interest in the written word and students having little exposure to the fine arts. In Passage 2, Line 13, I agree with what Paglia says that interest and patience in long, complex books and poems is diminished alarmingly. I feel that declining interest and patience with books might be because of the technology that is available now. Devices like the television, computer makes use of the modern day technology. These devices are able to show me both still and animated images. These images are filled with colours, thus making everything seems more interesting. What I feel is that humans are visual creatures; we appeal more to the visual than to the written word. Language is just not able to capture my interest as it does not appeal to my senses, it is not engaging enough. It is also more tedious to understand long, complex books and poems that are most commonly in black and white. Hence, I agree with what Paglia says about the declining interest and patience with the written word. In Singapore, there was a Harry Potter movie marathon on 13 July 2011 where fans would gather at GVmax to watch all 8 movies of the Harry Potter series in 25 hours. The tickets were sold out very quickly. Reading takes a longer time. Thus, it would be easier to watch 8 movies than read 8 books at one go. Not only is reading more tedious.
