Discuss the ways in which the Maya Civilization was technologically advanced.
The Mayan culture had existed for nearly four thousand years. During the period from A.D. 250 to A.D. 900 the Mayas experienced a growth, when the population and size of the settlements reached its peak. This period of time is referred to as the Classic Period. During the Classic Period, the Mayan civilization had developed a sophisticated mathematics systems and time measurement systems. They calculated the movement of planets, built cities and developed a government as well as recorded their religious belief using a highly advanced writing system. The Mayas ingenuity is not only evident in the advancement of their mathematics, astronomy, governance and architecture. But also in how they still managed to survive and escape to build new settlements, even after the hardships that came with being captured in the 1500s by Spanish explorers. Hardships that included slavery, new diseases introduced to them by the Spanish explorers and the lost of many of their temples and treasures that were claimed by the Spanish. Throughout this essay, the advancement of the Maya’s technologically will be explored further in detail. The Mayan showed technological advancement in their modes of transportation. This advancement becomes evident in the design of the Maya canoe called the chem, which was carved from a single tree trunk, usually cedar. The Maya also used oceangoing canoes to travel thousands of miles along coastal waters. Feather banners were attached to long poles along the shore to help sea travelers determine their location. This was a technological advancement because building canoes took skill in carpentry. It was no easy tasks building canoes light enough to float withstand turbulent waters as well as be large enough to accommodate up to 50 persons.
